Judge vs Governor

I am looking to add to my collection and find myself interested in the Taurus Judge and S&W Governor. Can anyone give me some insight on their preferences or familiarity between the two?

Governor is a way better gun. It has better maching and quality of materials. Also it can do .45acp with moon clips and the judge can not. Now for a longer barrel version the judge is the only option because the smith only comes in the snub nose of late.

Also I've actually dealt with broken judges and other various broken Taurus revolvers. I'll let you know the first time I find a broken ruger or smith revolver

Check out youtube. Some really good comparisons there. There is one that not only reviews the revolvers, but also speaks to customer service from each company. The review states that Smith and Wesson responded almost immediately and the gentleman waited and presumeably is still waiting for a response. I think he waited in terms of years......could be mistaken but don't think so.
For me, and personally handling (never fired either, but handled at my local gun shop), I would go with the S&W due to customer service. Not to mention that the Governor just felt better to me. It had a better trigger and better ergos for my hand. Cost a bit more, but you get what you pay for.

Sorry, should have clearly stated that Taurus is the company that did not respond to customer service requests.

If it was me, I'd buy the governor all day long because it shoots 45 acp and 410 shot shells. The Judge can't shoot 45 acp.

I had a Judge for a couple years. It is a fun gun to have, but not at all practical.
Both the S&W & the Taurus are way too big for concealed carry. But IF I had a ranch
out West, I would carry one for varmint control. For that purpose, a .410 hangun is
ideal.

I own the Governor by Smith & Wesson made in USA six shot not 5 like Taurus I think much better balance takes 410 shot gun shell plus I use 45 hollow point in rotation smoother action and I think much better made

The only gun I sold was a Judge. The reason I sold it was to get a Governor > > > 6 rounds instead of 5. You also have the option of using .45ACP
with included clips. It shoots better. When it comes to revolvers does anyone come close to the reputation of S&W? That would be Ruger in my opinion, not Taurus and Ruger doesn't make a similar gun. Go with S&W.

Too bad Taurus does not make the 7 shot ultralite anymore.

What are the asking price differences between the Governor and a comparable Judge?

I actually have 3 Judges and have had Zero issues with any of them. I regularly carry a Judge poly PD and have no problems concealing it. I have nothing bad to say about the Governor it is smith and Wesson quality all the way. It does have the advantage of shooting 45acp and with S&W coming out with a smaller Governor I will probably get that for carry. The new one is a 5 shot about the size of the Judge Public Defenders. I always recommend either one of these however you will run in to some real haters just ignore them I always do.

Taurus seems to have a Judge sized for everyone. I see several roles for a shotshell shooting handcannon: 1) Home defense, 2) anti-carjack, and 3) camp/trail gun.

I agree that the two best uses for the Judge or Governor are as a camp/trail gun and the best is as a nice home gun. Of course if you open carry then the size is less important. That is not a comment as to the Judge or Governor as a carry choice, just that you could OC

Thanks for all the great input. Some real food for thought. I like that these are dual purpose being able to fire the .410 and .45, making it a good option for a house gun instead of a shotgun. Next step will be to get each in hand and try shooting both. It sure looks like the features on the Governor put it a step above the Judge.

I know this is an older thread, but came across it again during a search for .410 pistols. I have two Judges and I also own one Governor. I like them both. Both shoot well and feel good in the hand. For comfort, I like the grip on the Judge, but like the weight of the Governor. The only issue I had, which was repeatable, was that the Governor didn't always fire the Winchester .410 self defense rounds, like the firing pin didn't hit the primer hard enough. It only happened to three of the shells out of a 20 round box. No FTF with either Judge. I have the 3" unfluted Judge as well as the Poly 'Public Defender'. All three are fun to shoot and without issues other than what I just mentioned. If you want to shoot .410 and .45 acp, get the Governor. If you can do without .45 acp, get the Judge.

Imagine you carry the Judge or Governor with Winchester .410 PDX rounds and you come across an active shooter with his SKS rifle at a baseball field.
