Animal control authorities say they are using a helicopter in the search for four pit bulls suspected of killing a 63-year-old jogger in Los Angeles County..

Authorities are warning people to be on the lookout for four tan-colored pit bulls, and say they have seized several dogs in a search for those who may have taken part in the attack.

Sheriff's Lt. John Corina told reporters that a woman in a car saw the dogs attacking the female jogger Thursday morning. The witness called 911 and honked her horn to try to get the dogs to stop.

"When the first deputy on scene saw one dog still attacking the woman, he tried to chase the dog away," Corina said. "The dog ran off into the desert, then turned around and attacked the deputy, the deputy fired a round at the dog and tried to kill the dog, and the dog took off into the desert."

The woman died while she was in an ambulance on the way to a hospital near the high desert community of Littlerock, about 65 miles northeast of Los Angeles, said Evelina Villa, county animal control spokeswoman.

The coroner's office was investigating to determine the cause of death.

Sheriff's officials alerted people in the area to watch for the four tan dogs, and they were using a helicopter to search for them.

Later Thursday sheriff's and animal control officials served a search warrant on a home near the site of the attack and took away eight dogs, six of them pit bulls and two of them of mixed breeds, the Sheriff's Department said in a Statement.

Investigators were trying to determine whether the dogs were involved in the attack.

A 29-year-old man from the house was arrested on suspicion of cultivating marijuana.

It was unclear whether the dogs that attacked the woman had collars or owners.

"In these areas, you might have a situation where people dump animals out in rural areas," said John Mlynar, a spokesman for the nearby city of Palmdale. He added that he'd never heard of an attack like Thursday's.

Residents who live near the site of the attack said stray dogs are constantly roaming the area and have attacked people before.

"It's really scary," Diane Huffman, of Littlerock, told KABC-TV. "I don't know what to think. I really think I'm going to be getting a gun to protect myself."

News flash for Diane Huffman....
You live in Los Angeles County....
You "Cannot" Legally carry a sidearm in that Fascist place!
(Good luck even trying to get a CCW).
:jester:

But don't worry, the cops will respond to the scene after the damage has been done to you & yours.

I have to ask how will the woman Diane Huffman be allowed to carry a firearm in CA. Unless she is famous or rich she will be a criminal! Wonder if she will want th gun laws in CA changed to allow her to be able to protect herself?

THis is a really sad story. I am personally a supporter of all bully breed dogs, especially APBT's. I would like to see the dogs that committed this attack first of all. Any dog who is brindle in color or a mutt mixed with pit are just labeled PIT BULLS. Many times it's mutts. But to my real point in this trajedy is that an actual firearm might not have needed to have survived this attack. Pepper Spray would have done alot to stop the attack. There are bad dogs of all breeds, I am sure this is big news simply because these dogs where said to be PIT BULLS. I have owned many Pit Bulls in my lifetime. I have trainned them in all forms and worked around more than I can count. I had one bite in all those years and it was from an abused dog I tried to rescue. People come before animals in my book, but I hate to see any living creature made out to be something that in most cases they are far from it. May this victim RIP and God Bless her family and friends. And if they find the owner of these dogs who had to know they were aggressive, well he should be locked up for not properly securing them. JUst my 2 Cents. OH one more thing, at the age of 13 my daughter, raised with many PITS in the home and in the yard. She jumped into help me break up more than one accidental rumble that happened over a 25 year period, while grown mean ran for the car! lol

If I am being threatened with aggression by any dog that is of size to cause me injury then I am not interested in preserving them by using bear spray et al, I want to eliminate them with prejudice--AKA shoot them dead. I am not prejudiced towards breeds, and I do not support breed bans, but I do walk a lot and encounter threatening dogs far too often. Most of them are not pit bull types. In my county I can shoot them. That is what IMO should be done, then the owners cited for having an aggressive dog and allowing it to stray without owner control.

Headline should have read four pit bulls attacking jogger shot and awaiting rabies study by county.

What?
I read nowhere that the actual dogs involved had been identified and captured.
Also, a rabies check may be required by law but is irrelevent. It is rare for these attacks to be caused by rabies. Rabies has very distinct symptoms. Said symptoms are not mentioned in the report.

I think what matters is that one of her first thoughts is that she needs protection and that she realizes one of the first means of affecting that is a firearm.

Kindly do not forget this is CA, where we must probably find out if the dogs were "provoked"--after all pit bulls also have rights -ask PETA. Interesting comment in story is that a deputy tried to shoot one of the dogs and apparently missed. Threads and replies on this forum are continually discussing protection against dogs and I have always maintained that a charging rampaging dog that is almost on top of you in a second is not a good candidate for disposal by firearm--you carry bear spray (will stop a grissly) you carry a baton, you carry a serrated knife--any and all of these less lethal defensive items offer you more realistic opportunities to defend. A firearm will probably miss in all the commotion and activity of a crazed dog and could easily end up causing injury to others in the area.

This is why my property is posted. If your pitbull enters my property and does not obey my order to scram, i will return it in to you black garbage bag. You can pick it up at the end of the driveway.

Really? Pepper spray might stop the person trying to rape your wife. It might stop the guy robbing you at knife point. You're really willing to bet you're life on "might", because you're an animal lover? I love dogs too, I have three, but if a dog or any other animal attacked me and I felt my life was in danger, it dies. Not me. Leave the pepper spray to the teenage girls.

I was not implying that nobody should use a firearm against a dog attack. I was only saying that if you are not able to carry legally, then the Spray might just be another option. I also know that many things could happen while busting off rounds in a nieghborhood trying to hit 4 dogs on the attack. I am sure you are the marksman of the year, but you might just miss and kill a kid or other innocent person in the area. Anyway, we all got opinions.....

Your reply to Mac357 is correct in his thinking that a little lipstick sized cannister of pepper will allow everyone, including the dog(s) to all go koombayah at the end of the day. My reply #8 refers to what I believe to be the reality of one or more dogs coming at you like a furry freight train with fangs out looking for blood, which is exactly what this was about. As I said, it could happen but it is highly unlikely that you will be able to unholster a firearm and accurately aim it at these dogs within the seconds before they are on top of you. Even the law officer failed to shoot the dog(s). Bear spray at 30 ft will stop a grizzly and having a serrated knife or pointed baton etal is more likely to injure or kill the dog(s) in close quarters than your firearm, which just might end up killing or injuring a bystander. Having any and all of the defense tools still requires situational awareness (SA), which, IMO, is sadly missing in many people and especially women who seem to focus on what is in front of them and are just not paying attention to their environment; certainly in this case where this lady was "just jogging along" probably thinking about nothing special or potentially dangerous. I do not know about you but my head is always moving and my eyes are always scanning everywhere--I take nothing for granted these days regardless of where I am and even then my "wheres" are limited based on my judgement of safety.

LOok all you people who responded to what I first posted either cannot comprehend english, or you are just ignorant. I am in this group because I am pro-gun and I carry one everyday. I had forgot that you have so many TYPE A wannabes in these forums that it's like a bunch of women sometimes. Thanks to those who took my words and twisted them into something I never said....you guys could save the world with a tooth pic I am sure. #1 I said that if you are not able to carry a firearm, you could use pepper spray, I never said a cheap ass lip stick size one #2 I promise if I was to put 4 trainned attack dogs on your asses , pit bulls or not, your ass would be luck to get off one good shot before being have eaten. That would depend on ones physical condition and many other factors. #3 JCreek, who mentioned my wife??? She carries a Ruger SR40 or her SR9C in some cases, I know what my wife would do without hesitation if attacked and it.s the same as I would. So you just worrry about yours and I can handle mine. Kelcarry, I agree with just about everything you said except the remark about a lip stick size spray. When my wife and I walk we have walking sticks, strong ones, both of use have blades, and a firearm. So how my opinion on a damn article got all these stupid responses is beyond me. I will keep it in mind that compaired to the others here I must be a complete idiot. My view when talking to people online, you reallly don't know who you are taking too. I choose to respect most opinions wether I agree or not. JUst something for some too think about.

Take a deep breath and smell that fine Mississippi air and chill. "Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never harm me"--words are just words. Another saying: "If you cannot stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen"---reply or write threads on facts and not opinions--opinions will bring other opinions. This is only a forum and not real life--we have enough problems in this country to get all upset about.

Oh, I am always chill Kcarry....I surely don't get seriously worked up over some damn forum. I just don't like people saying I said something that I didn.t. But I enjoy talking guns with other gun folks. I have also been places where I have used them against other human beings and they against me. Knowing how it is to be in real combat, I just find some people who own a Firearm think that they can shoot paper at a target 10 ft away and get tight group are some kinda supershooters.....lol But anyway, your right we got plenty real problems we got to be upset about. Maybe my PTSD gets triggered and I say things that online might sound different than I mean for them too. Anyway, have a good one and GOD BLESS AMERICA!
I really hope "WE the PEOPLE" can overcome this mess we got going on right now. I am sure I will be dead and gone before it ever gets fixed if it does. SAD!

How about you dial back the sexism to zero or shove it up your bigoted as$ where it won't show and only bother you, mmkay?

Terrible. With dogs there is strength in numbers. And joggers trigger the prey instinct. I don't think the breed is responsible. I can remember jogging along a country road once and I got chased by a small pack of mutts, including two really little dogs acting big and bad. They were funny but they were right in there with the others. Thank God they weren't powerful dogs.

Well said Mac. G-d Bless You and G-d Bless all our veterans and active service personnel. My son in law is active SC Army National Guard and just got back from Kuwait after a year as part of a rapid response force that thankfully was never needed. One of the joys of living in SC is the heartwarming way people here treat and respect the military. From welcomes at the airport to just thanking military in uniform or fatigues, they truly honor the service that these people are putting out for this country. Countless times, when my son in law goes out to eat with my daughter and grandkids (having just come from the armory in fatigues) he is greeted by the waiter or waitress with a "the bill has been paid by another patron with gratitude". You have a Blessed Day and a long and safe and healthy life my friend.

You have an impressive list of skill sets there my friend. As far as the dogs, If any of the Pit Bulls I have owned and trained over the past 25 years had an attitude one half of the attitude of my 3 Chihuahua's, I would have to put them down! lol They are meaner, pound for pound then any other dog I have own. Glad they are about a total of 14 lbs between the 3 of them!

Thank You Sir and it warms my heart to see people just take a minute out to thank a Veteran or AD soldier for their service. I do the same thing. I am proud to support the folks at Wounded Warrior and other great private charities that do more good for our vets than than the VA ever dreamed. The VA is a perfect example of another Government Mess. I will keep your son-in-law in my nightly prayers as I keep all our warriors. God Bless You and your family for the support you give, too many don't.
