Legally owned guns were under a bed when 9-year-old shot teen cousin in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG — A 76-year-old father was the owner of a gun that was used on his teenage son by a 9-year-old cousin Saturday, according to police.

three weapons — the pistol, an AK-47-style rifle and an AR-15-type rifle — were kept in the home under the bed of the father, Jaber Mohammed Jaber.

According to a police report, Anas Jaber was playing video games in the home about 3 p.m. Saturday when he noticed that his cousin was pointing a gun at him. The teen raised his left hand and told his cousin to put the gun down when it went off.

A bullet passed through Anas Jaber's hand and went into his neck, police said.

The teen initially told officers he had been the victim of a drive-by shooting, but he later said it was an accident, police said. He said he initially lied because he didn't want his cousin or anyone else to get into trouble.

He MIGHT have thought about investing in teaching his kids/grandkids/whatever some BASIC FIREARM SAFETY RULES. This is another sad example of the ounce of prevention/pound of cure syndrome. Teaching rules is free. Trigger locks can also be had for free. A firearms safe is a little more expensive, but compared to gunshot trauma it's a bargain at any price.

If I even looked too hard at a gun that I wasn't introduced to by an adult I would have gotten a beating, denied dinner, and if I was lucky- my friends would get to see me again sometime in the coming week. I never did touch a gun that wasn't mine or one that I was handed by an adult. Of course, that punishment would have landed everyone into jail today. Maybe even brought before an international tribunal for international law violations. LOL

i've got an approx~18 gun safe and have all the long guns lucked in there and my other pistols i cannot CC. then i've got a small gun vault near the bed for holding my 2 CCWs. my 5 y/o knows not to touch them and will not. the 1 y/o will know the same when she gets to an age of understanding.

like said above, multiple things could have stopped this from happening. bad thing is it looks bad on the rest of us.

WHAT??? These folks had a 9-year old Downs Syndrome kid in the house, and the guns were not locked up? I keep several of mine loaded and available, but under circumstances like those, the only loaded gun in the house would have been on my hip. DUH! WTF was ol' Jaber-jaber thinking?

His kid knew enough to tell the 9-year old down syndrome child to put the gun down.

Teaching your children to be gunwise isn't enough, unless they aren't allowed to have friends over your house and you never have relatives or friends visit who might have kids. Or unless your butler can be pressed into action as Eddie Eagle the instant a child appears on the premises. My butler always complains that the costume is to hot

Clearly FL gun owners and those with CWFLs are coming under assault right now - sadly it is the fault of FL gun owners and CCers being irresponsible and opening the door to over-reaction and calks for over-regulation. Lock up you weapons, do not play sheepdog and shoot unarmed teens. Each time some idiot acts irresponsible I have to see another anti-gunner on my local news. "No, stand your ground is not a bad law...this guy is a murderer!"..."No, not all gun owners are irresponsible and guns are not evil - this guy is negligent". Can't blame the antis - this response is easy to predict - and some fool handed it to them.

If we do not like what we are hearing we have few to blame but irresponsible fools with guns.

These incidents are reminders for each of us to tend to our own firearms with safe practices. All too often, instead of taking the information as a reminder, we get caught up in what the anti-gun people are saying about them. I think we should save that energy for responding to anti-gun people when and where they bring up the subject.

And why does this happen? Because it's taboo to talk about guns thanks to the antis. How about some ads on gun safety? How about gun safety being taught in schools? Can't do that, because they are evil. It's a self-fullfilling prophecy.

I have to agree. My dad was afraid of guns. Therefore I wasn't taught anything about them. He had a 22 rifle that was my grandfathers but he never touched it. When I turned 21 and was living in AZ I bought a p89dc. One day when I was back home my dad saw a box of my ammo and he asked what it was for. I showed him my ruger and he suggested I clean that old 22 rifle. I said I would if he gave it to me. Well I cleaned it all up and put back together. I realized shortly after that I put the magazine in before putting in the slide. Yep you can guess here. The stock was on my thigh and barrel pointing at the ceiling, BANG! Oh ****. A quarter sized hole in my ceiling. I was very lucky I didn't hurt anyone. I found the bullet in the roof in the attic. It didn't go all the way through. It was a big learning experience.

I always tell people for the price of one quality gun, you can purchase a decent safe. When people ask me about purchasing a new gun I always ask do you have a safe. Then add why buy more firearms to leave them lay around unprotected for easy pickins??Even if you just get a Homark or other locking cabinet , it is piece of mind that an incident like this one will not happen even though anyone could just carry the cabinet out of the house or pry the door open.
