Is it necessary

I have thought of this many times. If you are in a situation that you feel your life is threatened and you draw your firearm at which time the aggressor backs off and leaves the scene is it necessary to report this incident to the Police to perhaps CYA?

If somebody makes himself an immediate and credible threat to your life and limb, why would he not also lie about it to the police?

The person who calls the cops first gets to be the OFFICIAL victim.

Don't get me wrong. I haven't believed in the fairy story of police "protection" of individuals in something like forty years. I have ZERO expectation that the cops will do ANYTHING of benefit to me EXCEPT file a report. I want that report to say that I was the VICTIM of said crime.

Whether it was the original aggressor or just a bystander who happens to call the police and you didnt you could wind up in trouble for brandishing (if not more). It would be safest for you to cover yourself by being the one to report it to the police

Here in NC intentionally pointing a gun at someone, whether the gun is loaded or not and regardless of whether any threat is made, is assault (GS 14-34). If I had to point a gun at someone I would certainly call the police and report the incident emphasizing that it was a self defense situation.
