Is it just me?

I bought a gun from a guy advertising on another website. He said he would only take a postal money order. No problem, safe as can be.

I immediately go down and PRIORITY mail,w/tracking, a letter to his provided address with the postal money order plus extra money he wanted for some ammunition he would no longer be able to use, as per him. I paid him almost retail, or the same price I could have gotten it at a Gunshow, which I frequent. Really didn't need it as I have a butt load already, just trying to help him out.

Here we go, 4 days later, two days after he should have gotten the letter, he emails and tells me that he tracked the letter, with the number I provided him with and it had been delivered to his mailroom at work but would not be delivered till at least Tuesday because of the New Years Holiday and the holiday staff shortage this week.

Now mind you, I had no idea this was his work address. I most definitely did not expect him to ship the gun before he got the Money Order so why would I send him anything that was bogus just for the hell of it while he still had the gun and would not send it till he was satisfied.

I sent him the money order in his name so he could cash it without him even sending me the gun. I did this in good faith.

Now he says he doesn't feel comfortable sending me the gun till his workplace opens back up after I spent extra money to get the check to him fast.

Is it just me or is this a one way leap of faith and I'm the only one leaping?

Oh yeah, one more thing. He is sending it to an FFL dealer, not me, who he could have it stopped before delivery to me if anything was askew.

Caveat emptor

When making a business arrangement, it is not requisite to try to help the other party out; at times, ill advised. It sounds like you went out of your way to make it easy on him and he when out of his way to make it easy on him. If this is the way this guy operates, I hope you aren't disappointed with the product too.

One of the greatest lessons my Dad taught was "Try to never buy anything of value from someone you can't reach out and punch in the mouth".

I hope this works out for you but it's not you. I'd be feeling nervous about the whole thing.

Your dad is a very wise man. You must be an equally good guy from learning what your parents thought you.

He was, I only wish he could have been around longer (he was in his late 60s when I was born. He was a WW1 vet and a 40+ year railroad man). Thank you for the compliment - I try. If you think I'm special, you should meet my 15 year old daughter - She'd knock your socks off !

Bogus postal money orders are common. The seller will not know if the document has any value until he presents it to the post office on his end and they determine it is legitimate and give him cash. He just wants to get paid. You are expecting him to ship the gun without being paid. That is not reasonable.

Then what's the point of me wasting time and money by waiting in line at a post office when I simply could have sent him a business check he could have walked into any Bank of America and cashed? BOA's are everywhere and they certainly won't cash a check with unavailable funds from the bank it was drawn on.

I have to agree on this one. First, "priority mail" isn't all that fast. If you sent it overnight express, that would have gotten to him the next day.

Secondly - I used to exclusively use my work address for eBay and other online transactions. It was easier to receive a package there, than at my apartment complex (where I have a teeny 3"x4" mail slot). It had the added advantage of keeping a potentially dishonest seller or buyer from knowing where I live.

Lastly, as wallyb said - there is a LOT of money order fraud out there. Chances are, once he's been paid, he will ship the gun as promised.

So quit complaining, and be patient! :P

You'd have had the same issue. Bank check fraud is common too.

Have you seen the quality of work a $300 photo printer can do?

This is one of the reasons that if they don't take PayPal I don't buy over the internet. Just too many people out there looking for a way to scam you. You have no recourse whatsoever sending him a postal MO, and the longer he delays you the colder the trail becomes.

Yeah, I get that, but sending him a check, I would have expected a delay and I wouldn't have had to stand in line at the PO. I always use the self serve kiosk for priority mail. I wasn't talking about a bank check, I said business check. When you bring a check to the bank it was drawn on, they check funds.

And priority mail got it there in two days but his mailroom is the one that slowed it down, so unbelievably, priority mail did it's job.

I just got an email from him and he is sending me a 50 box of Lawman rounds to make up for it.

Now I'll stop complaining:):):)

I'm just one of those 'instant gratification' type guy's and if things worked as planned, I would have picked the gun up on Tuesday. As it stands, it probably won't be till Friday now.

I just need to vent, and vent I did.:):):)

If he does not ship... you now have U.S. Postal Inspectors on your side. You are using a USPS Money Order and have transmitted it via USPS mail system. I believe this becomes mail fraud. Postal Inspectors are very parochial about mail fraud. You do not have this advantage on a bank check. Hopefully you indicated on the MO what it was for.

Just what I was thinking, I work for USPS just call your local Postal Inspectors in a week or two if you have not received the firearm.

Personally I wouldn't send anything until I had the money in hand.

For all the seller knows the envelope may only contain a newspaper clipping.

Your Dad is a very wise man. I've never met him and I like him already!
