Is a 22 really not a good defensive gun?

Hello SGB , nice to meet the resident know-it-all & Troll with such un-constructive criticism .Your short diatribe indicates you are from any caliber is fine as long as it starts with a 4 and ends with a 5 . The " I don't know " portion of your statement sums you up quite well . Many young males have participated in BB and Pellet gun fights , but to date none were not voluntarily in a .22 fight which is a better defensive weapon than a car key or baseball bat .
Just curious but , do you call your students foolish too ?

Hello stovepipe, limp wrists run in the genes do they?

As to my post, I call it the way I see it and if the adjective "foolish" offends you blame your upbringing. As to your "FOOLISH" assumption that "you are from any caliber is fine as long as it starts with a 4 and ends with a 5" you'd be wrong. If you were an active member of this forum instead of the hobby lurker you appear to be you'd know that I have no problem recommending 9mm and .38 special calibers as minimum choices for self defense use.

As its apparent you don't like strongly opinionated men you won't like me, and I'm heartbroken as a result.

....good luck with those limp wrists.

Do an experiment. Take a small sewing needle, jam it as hard as you can into any body part you like and see how that feels. Now take that same feeling and multiply it times the number of how much bigger a .22 round is than a needle and tell me if a .22 will cause enough hurt to stop someone coming at you. I'll be waiting for your reply.

What a moronic thing to post.

I do not see how anything has changed by using those words.

The question was, They say that a 22LR is not good for defense, but is there a difference when you use a 22 hollow point?

I see nothing about COST, and nothing about an 79 yr. old lady from the original poster.

I also see nothing about the PD from the original poster.

I was quoting you, not the OP, when referencing cost and the personnel of a police department.

I say again...nothing has changed.

A .22 for defense will more likely get the defender killed than using a .45 - I have never understood why anyone argues a .22 is good for anything except squirrels.

I was fortunate to have my Henry handy when I was attacked by this vicious intruder.

Looks like a head shot to me. And no need to call the cops. Good shot there Dead-Eye. And I'm jealous - really like those Henry Rifles.

If forced to use a .22 LR cartridge, I think I would load solids, not hollow points, as I would be going for penetration instead of expansion. Furthermore, I wouldn't be too concerned with over-penetration.

What is over penetration?
Have you ever seen someone shot where a bullet over penetrated?
This is getting to the point of becoming an urben legend.

Couldn't agree more. Civilians shooting bystanders with bullets that completely miss the bad guy are very rare, what's the possibility of it happening after going through the bad guy?

I think sgb said it here before, maybe it was someone else, under penetration kills the innocent more often then over penetration kills an innocent.

And even with hollow points, you still want penetration. You just want the cavity larger, while getting the same depth.

That is what the FBI test were all about, getting more penetration. The Miami shooting that started the whole thing was because of underpenetration, NOT over peneration.
