Is 10mm Too Much for Home Defense?

Is 10mm “Too Much”?

There seem to be two camps when it comes to the utility of 10mm. There are those who believe it to be God’s second great gift to mankind, the first being the 1911, which was bestowed through His prophet, John Browning, peace be upon him. Then there are those who believe it is “too much.” Too much penetration, too much recoil, too much money, you name it.

Now, I’m not the kind of man who’s particularly interested in telling another man what to do. You do what suits you best. Heck, some people juggle geese. But if you’re one of those in the second category, I’d like to dispel a few myths for you. If you still disagree, that’s your prerogative, but at least you’ll have learned something.

Read on page 5 and 6, average penetration of the .45 and the 10mm in the FBI tests. You will notice that the .45 actually had about 2 inches MORE penetration than the 10 mm.

So I guess all those carrying 1911's around should put them in the safe right now and not carry them either?

I'v seen those test's and I honestly don't know whats going on with them, I suspect someone not being completely strait, I have 10mm and 45 acp test's in wet newspaper, using wally world ammo, Winchester I think, at 10 ft the 10mm went in aprox 12-13 in, and the 45 maybe 9 or 10, plus the 10mm rock the hell out of you with recoil, compared to the 45 the guns were both glocks, a 20 and 21 and the 10ammo was almost twice what the 45 was in cost, also while doing the wet newspaper I also ck a 9mm, 9+p+ and 357 Sig the +p+ and Sig were near identical about 16-17 inches, and just for fun I shot a rd from my 500 mag, was last shot of the day my test aperatus fell apart and the wet paper was in shreds

I found this tidbit interesting:

"What is the best round in?

~snip~

.357 - we haven’t found one that is sufficiently better than the best .38 load to justify all the sound and fury of shooting it, unless you need the increased effective range, which the higher velocity gives you. We have only tested five so far, and none of them stands out.

• .38 Special - the Federal 147 grain HydraShok"

I know that many will fight this tooth and nail but, this reinforces why I choose .38Spl over .357mag for carry. My apologies for likely starting another "dead horse" argument....

Any handgun or shotgun is fine. Rifle, not so much. But if it is all you have... then...

My neighbors are too close to use my ARs or AKs.

I think any handgun or shotgun is fine for home defense. As long as you can hit your target. Three quick shots from a .22lr in center mass will stop most people, just as one good hit in center mass from a 10mm will stop people. Don't try to impress with caliber, just make sure you can hit what you aim at.
:triniti:

I hope you were being facetious, the prospect of a bullet missing the target and possibly going trough a wall and hitting someone on the other side I something you really need to consider.

If you are concentrating on missing, you are going to miss. Also, if a bullet is not going to be able to penetrate a wall, what make you think it will penetrate [very deeply] flesh and bone?

Ah a voice of reason.... so, just to be clear, the FBI wants 12" of penetration but opsspec doesn't want the same bullet to traverse through 2 sections of 1/2" of drywall?

Home defense use a 12 ga.
Carry your pistol when you are out and about. The pistol is not the best choice. But walking around with a 12 ga. attracts to much attention.

Honestly I think worrying about what someone else uses to defend themselves is none of anybody's business. Shure we all have our favorites but there is really no reason to push it on others.

Practice well, practice often and carry always. Carrying something is always better than carrying nothing.

Have you tried clearing a house with a shotgun? It is pretty long. A handgun works very well.

Sawed off shotguns work very well in the scenario you described and unlike what some believe, is not illegal, just well-monitored by the BATFE.

In fact, I'd have to say, my personal favorite for home defense is the sawed off shotgun because of how it operates and the fact that it is not too long.

I hate the term sawed off shotgun, I much prefer SBR. Any way I can piss of a liberal by using better terminology and make a firearm still legal, makes me smile. :D ...though, we still shouldn't be taxed for it...that's not what the founding father's envisioned!

Sorry for the rant.

The 10mm is not too much if you choose the correct ammo. FMJ could cause over penetration. However a good frangible or quickly expanding hollow point would be effective and safer. I own a 10mm glock and I love the caliber.

SBR = short barreled rifle.

A shortened shotgun is not a short barreled rifle. If you wish to give it a different name, the BATFE calls it a SBS (short barreled shotgun). https://www.atf.gov/search/site/sbr Not sure why you took umbrage to a term that has been around for a long time and refers to a time when that's exactly how you shortened the barrel on your shotgun; you sawed it off.

I agree we shouldn't be assessed an extra fee (tax, penalty, whatever you want to call it) through the BATFE, for:
-shortening the barrel on long barreled firearms
-suppressors
-three-round burst firearms
-fully automatic firearms
-destructive devices (DD) (grenades, bombs, missiles, etc.)
-AOWS - Any other weapons - a catch all category for the BATFE to limit our right to whatever other weapon they deem necessary to regulate.

Sorry, brain fart, but yes, SBS. The reason why sawed off shouldn't be used because often times it is done illegally, then again, crimes with said tools are also illegal. Anyway, this is far off topic... :(
