A couple of Sky News reporters came into the store where I work today to take pictures of the firearms we sell and to get some input about our "gun culture." They were more than a little overwhelmed at all the firearms we have available and how comparatively easy it is for us to obtain them here. It was an informative conversation for them.
They began by asking if we have any .50 BMGs in stock; my store doesn't handle them, and then one of them asked to see the "machine gun" we have on the shelf - the Savage 110 BA in both .300 WinMag and .338 Laupua mag. After explaining the difference between a bolt action gun and a machine gun, which even the Victoria (Australia) Assistant Police Commissioner mis-identified on a radio broadcast a short time ago as an "automatic" (Australian Radio Broadcast Identifies "Biggest, Ugliest Gun of All Time" | BuzzPo), a fact that was not lost on one of the two reporters, they asked about the murders that take place here in the US. I acknowledged that we have them (our murder rate of 3.5 per 100,000 population, BTW, is actually one of the lowest in the world), but then brought the conversation to the real issue of violent crime in general, which has skyrocketed in both Australia and Britain in the aftermath of their total gun bans, as well as the rapidly rising murder rate by all other methods. They had to acknowledge that the bun ban has not decreased violence, and that, as a recent report indicated, gangs are heavily armed in Australia (Gun Crime 'Out of Control' Despite Strict Australia Laws). They were a bit shocked when I told them, as I have posted here before on several occasions, that the incidence of violent crime here in the US is about 430 per 100,000 population, while the incidence of violent crime in Britain was over 2,000 per 100,000 - so bad that Britain has been declared the most violent EU member, and the French gov't issued travel advisories during the London Olympics urging their citizens NOT to attend. The reporters readily acknowledged what we have been saying for years - when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have them, and the lack of firearms for the general public will do nothing but embolden criminals.
Before they left, one of the reporters had his picture taken with the BA 110. After giving it back to me, he said, "You realize that I can be put in jail in Australia just for having my picture taken while holding this weapon? If this picture is ever published on Facebook or anywhere else, I could be charged and put in prison."
It was a short conversation, but an interesting one.
And an off-the-record one as well.
Remember, THESE are the laws Obama wants US to implement here.
