INSTRUCTOR ARRESTED....needs to be more of this

I see your point...I retired from LEO, and I must confess I know a lot of officers that will gladly give you're their opinion of the law and be wrong. I don't think it is intentional, just if the question is outside the daily dealings with statues.

Hell I've even done this a few times....When someone walks up and asks you rather than telling them you do not know; you give them your interpretation.

I was broken of this by a wise old Sargent one day when I gave bad advice. The Sargent embarrassed me but at least the citizen did not leave with my bad advice. From that point forward I would not give my opinion on any law but refer them to a Judge or Attorney.

I've even seen attorneys that can give bad advise...

I think the State should give these students some assistance...

For some/most people uttering the phrase "I don't know" is admitting abject failure. Rather than just saying that they will make up all kinds of excuses, provide false information and just outright lie rather than admitting that they don't know something. This must be human nature as I haven't found it to be limited to any one type person.

As for attorneys you pay them for advice and expect an answer so they either have to provide and answer or not charge you. They really don't have the option of "I don't know" but that leads to some very bad advice sometimes. I am glad that wise old Sargent taught you a valuable lesson. There is nothing wrong with saying "I think but you better check it out as I am probably wrong" where you leave the person with a source to go to.

As you say there are a lot of people, not just LEO that will give you their opinion on something whether it is fact or not and tell you that it is a fact.

If I have a student or anyone that asks me a question that I don't know the answer to, I will tell them that I don't know. But I will also tell them, let me write down your question and I will find out. When I respond to their question I will state where the information came from so they know the source it came from.

Excellent comment and that makes me remember that when I was going through Instructor Training (Not for anything gun related but in my former work on how to be a good instructor and trainer) one of the things pointed out was do not be afraid to say "I don't know but together we will find out". This takes the sole burden off of you and shows that you are ready to help. It also shows the student that you are honest and that they can believe your answers. It also shows the student that they did not necessarily as a dumb question but rather a good question that needs an answer. Now when I tell someone that their password has to be in small letters they ask "How about the numbers, does it have to be little numbers too?", I haven't really come up with a good answer except "Yup, little numbers too". I have been asked twice about that. :help:

"I became an instructor because the instructor that taught the CWP class I attended was lacking, and I said that I could do a better job. I did research before and after the class to learn what I didn't know, and a great deal of it should have been imparted by that instructor. So I put in the time and expense to obtain the certifications, developed my own course, and teach what I feel people really need to know. And some people even get training from me without paying a fee."

We need more instructors like you!
Thanks for your service.

our instructor gave us all the answers to the test before handing out the test he told us what was going to be on the test and i think those who still got an answer wrong were allowed to change the answer it was such an easy test i think it only had 10 questions on it and then all we had to do at the range was pick up an already loaded revolver shoot the target and put the gun down and get our certificates
i was expecting alot more but that's all there was to it here in florida so it's up to the ccwp holder to brush up on skills tactics and safe practices on their own ..we were given just the basics but i searched and studied all our laws pertaining to concealed weapons and getting my own practice in when i can before i start carrying plus i need to get the right kind of gear to carry yet as well
and practice with it while my permit app is being processed
