This is a very abbreviated blurb of the story, which was in three parts. Just to note, I am a late Cold War era vet, but have lots of Vietnam Vet friends so I am interested.
Edwin Crosby was a Vietnam Vet. One night after he returned he heard Walter Cronkite say on the CBS Evening News in 1974 that there had been Congressional testimony by the DOD and VA that there had been a secret code on Vets DD214s called “spin codes” and that they were not going to be put on them anymore. This affected probably 200K, people with dishonorable and bad conduct discharges.
He was #1 on the list to be hired for a NYS civil service job in 1974, but they hired people down the list. He filed an EEOC complaint but lost. Later he found out more details about the codes, and filed in Federal Court that he didn’t get the job due to the codes.
He has fought this since then and still fighting it. He has laid it out to federal judges, and actually had a meeting in the early 80s with Senator Joseph Biden and USN Commander John McCain (who would soon be elected as a representative to the US House from Arizona)
True or not? The code is found in block 12b of your DD214, and says SPN XXX if you are Army, and SDN XXX if USN or AF.
His code is SPN 411. I happened to do a search to see if I could find a photo of a DD214 to keep from going back through the video…and the first one I found had a code of SPN 411, the same as his.
These codes are supposedly for any number of undesirable conditions that the person was when he left the service, and make the type of discharge, including honorable, irrelevant.
He found tons of proof over the years, including that vets benefits were being paid to ghost personnel using case numbers from real vets that were denied benefits because of these codes, and that the codes were also distributed to major corporations to prevent them from hiring these people.
I personally don't know whether to believe it or not. I nearly stopped watching when it was mentioned later in the story that he had been a classified operations/black helicopter kind of guy, but had gotten pretty interested by that point. Met a lot of secret squirrel posers over the years and usually question when it comes out about someone.
If you want any more detail, you gotta watch the video.
