Inform LOE of firearm?

Work nut

New member
Im in NY and its not required to inform LEO's of having a firearm when stopped but who here thinks its a good idea to let them know anyway? Personally I plan to wait if they ask (although I dont usually get pulled over).Im sure there are a lot of LEO's that prefer we dont have firearms period.

Inform in NY sounds like you want them to count the boolets in your gun.

There are a number of things to consider, on both sides of the coin.

I assume you have a concealed carry permit?

Legally you don't have to..... done.

In NC I am requried to inform. Only had to do it once, to which the LEO replied "um OK" and didn't even ask to see my permit.

Wow, it's like the Wikipedia page of "inform or not" threads up in here tonight! LOL

In one of those threads I closed a post with this:

These threads get more and more twisted as they go on....and on....and on....and on....and on.

Slow start on this one so far, but it will probably take off sooner or later.

Police in NYS may not count the rounds in a mag anymore than they can search your car. The NYS Police Guide to the Safe Act instructs the police that such a search is illegal. Besides, the Western district fed court in NY ruled the 7-round-limit unconstitutional. It's not being enforced.

Back to the OP... DO NOT inform in NY unless asked specifically or if you're carrying and asked to step out of the car. Also be careful if the gun is in the glove box or pocketbook. When you open it to get your insurance card you may cause concern if he sees the gat.

Given the guy has been here for 3 years you would think he'd know that

Well,Im so sorry for being a pita.In 3 years I have less posts than you can count on one hand.Lately my life has been crazy so I dont get to post much.Again, sorry
And thanks for those who have been helpful,I appreciate it

Plain rule of thumb is if the officer asks if you have any firearms, be honest. If you are caught lying your situation will become more complicated to explain why you did not answer honestly, even if you legally are not obligated to tell them. This applies to states that do not have the legal requirement to notify an officer.

The exception to above is if your in a situation where you can reasonably expect the officer to discover you have a firearm, even if it's concealed or open carried. It may be far more prudent to tell the officer in advance of the discovery of the firearm.

I had a little accident with my truck last evening in ohio I am a resident of Florida but summer in ohio called the ohio highway patrol in ohio you must tell the officer you have a permit and are armed so when he drove up I walked over to the cruiser said hello told him I had a ccw and had a pistol I my pocket he thanked me for telling him and that was it
