Indiana Open Carry.

Greetings,

New here, but thought I'd answer a querry I noticed earlier about Indiana.

Yes. At the current time, you must be licensed to carry in Indiana. But any current law-abiding citizen can get one.

And also, Yes. Indiana is..........Right to Carry, Shall Issue. Not like Ohio which is Right to Carry, May Issue. Or worse yet, Illinois (and others): No Right, No Issue.

And again yes, there is a price ($30 for four years, and $150 lifetime) All States are looking for money in any regard. Indiana also does no background check, no paid training, you don't have to notify an officer you are armed if pulled over........(although, that can be a good thing. It's gotten me out of ONE speeding ticket that I know of, when I handed the officer my Gun-Card)........but those are just the basics.

Most people view this as a "Concealed Carry Weapons" permit, but it is as it states: "Right to Carry a Handgun". It allows you to:


1. Carry Concealed.
2. Carry Open.
3. Carry in your car/vehicle/motorcycle/boat.
4. Carry to a school function. (If only dropping off or picking up said schoolchild)
5. You CAN carry in a bar, or any establishment that serves alcohol. (Although I would recomend going concealed.)

Indiana Law states only place you cannot carry, with few exceptions:

Places off-limits when carrying:
1. In or On School Property.
2. On a school bus
3. In or on property that is being used by a school for a school function
4. Private School(IC 20*9.1*1*3) & (IC 35*41*1*24.7)
5. Head Start (IC 35*41*1*24.7)
6. Preschool (IC 35-41-1-24.7)
7. IC 35*47*9*1Allows the carry of firearms by persons permitted to possess and who are transporting a person to or from school or a school function.
8. On an aircraft
9. Controlled access areas of an airport
10. During annual State Fair 80 IAC 4-4-4 (Must lock in vehicle)
11. Shipping port 130 IAC 4-1-8 (Controlled by Indiana Port Commission)
12. A riverboat Casino
13. Gov't buildings. ie: Court Houses, unless authorized.

All in all, Indiana isn't that bad. One of the best, actually.

Not sure what you mean about the Ohio right to carry may issue thing I am in Ohio and thought it was legal to open carry here without any permit am I wrong? just wondering I new to all this.

Open carry is only allowed in an automobile and must have permit/license.

Not sure if it's true or not and I am researching this but our Local LEO told me that if was fine to open carry on the streets as long as it's not concealed in any way ie. a long shirt jacket tucked in your pants ect. without a permit . He did mention however without a concealed carry permit a firearm could not be transported loaded or with the ammo in the same compartment as the driver he said I know this plays havoc with the pickup drivers as there is really only one way to carry ammo and that in the bed provided there is no sliding window access to the bed if so then that is not legal either. He told me that neighbors have called him for others open carrying and although he does investigate they were not breaking any law even though the neighbors stated they were insighting a panic as long as they are not swinging it around in a aggressive manner and just walking up the street with it strapped to thier side they were breaking no law. Again I'm new to this and am still researching his claims but our local LEO is a pretty good feller kinda like Andy Griffith heck he even target shoots with the locals.

What I was saying about Ohio is:

In Indiana, you have the right to carry to protect yourself. As long as you don't have a felony (or misdemeanor domestic violence) conviction, they will issue you a license.

(And Indiana is a "handgun license", which means you can carry concealed or openly if you so choose.)

Ohio's carry license is "Right to carry, May issue." Which means that you have the right, but they may not issue you a license. They don't have to. If you've pissed off a local cop, don't take some required State mandated class, dated the Sheriff's daugher and pissed her off, they don't have to issue you one if they don't want to.

Yes, I say some of that in jest, but............that is how Ohio is.

Just to clarify.....

The Indiana License to Carry a Handgun, itself, does NOT allow open carry, nor prohibit any type of carry. The fact that the Indiana legal codes do NOT address open/concealed carry in any fashion, is what allows open carry to be legal in Indiana.

The laws in these states are very grey and could cause you a lot of problems if you go toting a gun around openly. The states that have a lot of grey area on open carry are Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Colorado, Missouri, Kansas, Louisiana , Mississippi, Alabama, North Carolina, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maine, Delaware and New Hampshire. You shouldn't carry open firearms in these states just to avoid a charge of bringing terror to the people which only requires a citizen to see you carry open firearms and saying they are in fear. You will get charged.

There is no "grey" area in PA law. It is not prohibited by statute, therefore it is legal by default.

I take most of the information i read with a grain of salt do to the ever changing laws in america .Just passing on info,it never hurts to be cautious where the law is concerned.

However, if you keep loaded magazines or speedloaders, then the firearm is considered loaded, even if they are not inserted into the firearm. Keep mags empty and ammo in commercial ammo boxes.
3. Open carry while on foot in Ohio is completely legal.
4. In fact, of that list of states where one "shouldn't open carry", most are rated "open carry friendly" by Link Removed.
5. Indiana does require a criminal background check, as well as fingerprinting.

And yes, I stand corrected. But as far as I was lead to believe, it was a "State" background check. Not the NICS/Fed background check. And another yes, there are fingerprint requirements as well. But again, I was lead to believe that is was used for the State of Indiana, NOT the Fed's.

But I have NO problem with being proven wrong. Thanks ultimmer.
