In search for my first CCW....

I'm on a low budget, so I'm deciding between .40 auto S&W Sigma or something similar in 9mm...What are your suggestions?...Any other recommended CCW in lower price bracket?

The Sigma line is widely known to be a dog. I'd stay away from them. I have soem experience with students bringing sigmas to the range and I've seen many malfunctions. I'd go for a used M&P over a new Sigma. Kel tec also makes some decent inexpensive 9's.

agree with above post, i have a M&P .40 and love it, might want to look into a quality "used" gun insted of buying somthing cheaper that could fail when you need it most. good luck in your search. might also want to look into revolvers as well. a .38 spl+p round is better than nothing and will still get the job done.

Get a Glock 23 or 27. around 500 new and it will be last gun you will ever need to buy. Now, wanting to buy is a different story.

I carry a Kahr CM9 with crimsom trace laser. Im very happy with it. The new CM line is very affordable and it has a very smooth trigger. I shot it and the LC9 before my purchase and the trigger on the Kahr was much better. LC9 is still a great gun though.

+1 On Kahr. I have a friend who works in their factory and they're great guns. I didn't mention them because I wasn't aware of the price on this gun. Most Kahrs that I've seen are pretty expensive. This is good to know...

Sigma

I have the Sigma in the 9mm variant for CCW. Never had any malfunctions with the gun. Two things to consider with the Sigma. Long and heavy trigger pull. Shoot one first. Second, the size. Concealling a Sigma is harder than some of the others that have been mentioned. I love mine just wish it was smaller for CCW. Trigger pull you get used to with practice.

The first Sigma's were horrendous, the current Sigma's are very underrated with great ergonomics but a long and HEAVY trigger. For not much more $$$ the S&W SD9 may well be just the ticket for you. It shares the Sigma's ergonomics and at first look appears to be a modernized Sigma, however it has a completely different fire control group with a much better trigger than it's predecessor the Sigma.

I have a S&W .38spl 4", but wanted a pistol as my carry...But what I can hear from most people here, the .40 auto is pretty heavy gun and not too easy to conceal...Any experience with .380 auto anybody??..Gander has a Ruger .380 auto for about $280+, but the mag holds only 6 rounds and I'm not sure about reliability of that gun..Also, I have pretty big paws and that Ruger seems to be quite small...I guess I'll just go to the store and put my hands on it to feel it..The other advantage of a small gun is that you can carry it almost anywhere on oyur body, with .40 your options are limited...

S&w .40 ve

I have had this firearm and a few other ones forever it seems. The weapon is accurate and I have had no problems with it. It seems to eat any ammo I put through it. I'm very eased with it.

My first Kel Tec P 11, I had fall apart after 45 rounds. I received a new for Christmas. No problems with it. I think the first one was just a bad gun. Kel Tec's customer service is wonderful.

I'd get an M&P 9, I have one with almost a thousand rounds thru it. It performs flawlessly! I went out shooting and it was 22 degrees with 18mph winds, it never jammed or had a Failure To Feed or a Failure To Extract.

My CC choice needs to be small, lightweight, undetectable, snag free, accurate, and have enough punch to neutralize an attacker with the all-important first shot. I began with a vintage PPK, which had some feed issues with my favorite RBCD ammo. I subsequently upgraded to a 15-ounce J-frame snubby because of it's great reputation for concealability, reliability and ease of maintenance. Its potential stopping power with RBCD Platinum Plus 60 grain TFSP rounds was a plus too. My CCL instructor is an ex Army Special Forces operator, whose daily carry is a short grip Kimber Ultra+CDP II with a 3-in. barrel. He never misses an opportunity to emphatically extoll the virtues of the venerable 1911-style .45, calling it "The Finest Close Combat Weapon The World Has Ever Known." Over the years he has sold me on the .45 ACP as being arguably the best CC choice for stopping power; and while I love shooting his .45 for CCL qualification, the Kimber's a bit too pricy for me. So today, I carry a Kahr P45 loaded with RBCD Performance Plus 90 grain TFSP rounds that generate a muzzle velocity of about 2036 fps and 828 ft-lbs of energy at distance of 10-ft. There are lots of great choices out there, and I hope this helps you make the best decision for your needs.

If your talking the S&W Sigma. The .40 and the 9mm are the same size. I wouldnt say its hard to conceal but you do have to think about what your wearing and what your doing if you want it to stay that way. I carry OWB at the 4:00 position and dont have much issue except with my shirt riding up when Im doing stuff.

When looking at .380s, I have a 2 finger sized .380 and its a bear to hold at times and is not rated for SD ammo. Hollow points just wont feed right. Two things I think about when Im looking at another is a full sized grip and usable ammo selection.

Are you looking to buy new or used?

What do you consider "low price bracket"?

If you want to shop by price rather than quality, you might try going to web sites like GunBroker.com or Cheaperthandirt.com to see what's on the market and going for what price.
