Man sentences for firearms violations

ORRUM — An Orrum man was sentenced to 17 1/2 years in prison on Wednesday for federal firearm charges.
Bobby Wayne Wilkins, 43, was sentenced by United States District Judge James Dever III after he pled guilty on Aug. 17 to unlawful possession of two firearms, according to a statement by U.S. Attorney George E.B. Holding. Wilkins was also sentenced to five years of supervised release.
On Oct. 26, 2008, St. Pauls police found two loaded firearms — a .44 caliber Super Blackhawk revolver and a Norinco 7.62 SKS rifle — in Wilkins’ vehicle during a traffic stop, according to the statement.
Wilkins’ had prior felony convictions, including second-degree trespassing, seven counts of breaking and entering, eight counts of larceny, possession of marijuana, two counts of safecracking, two counts of second degree burglary, and grand larceny, that prohibited him from having weapons..
“This defendant has an extensive criminal history and continues to disregard the restrictions placed upon him,’’ Holding said in the statement. “The Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative was designed to deal with exactly this type of repeat offender. We will continue to use this initiative to its fullest extent to prosecute such offenders.”
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, and the St. Pauls police all assisted the investigation.
