ORRUM — An Orrum man was sentenced to 17 1/2 years in prison on Wednesday for federal firearm charges.

Bobby Wayne Wilkins, 43, was sentenced by United States District Judge James Dever III after he pled guilty on Aug. 17 to unlawful possession of two firearms, according to a statement by U.S. Attorney George E.B. Holding. Wilkins was also sentenced to five years of supervised release.

On Oct. 26, 2008, St. Pauls police found two loaded firearms — a .44 caliber Super Blackhawk revolver and a Norinco 7.62 SKS rifle — in Wilkins’ vehicle during a traffic stop, according to the statement.

Wilkins’ had prior felony convictions, including second-degree trespassing, seven counts of breaking and entering, eight counts of larceny, possession of marijuana, two counts of safecracking, two counts of second degree burglary, and grand larceny, that prohibited him from having weapons..

“This defendant has an extensive criminal history and continues to disregard the restrictions placed upon him,’’ Holding said in the statement. “The Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative was designed to deal with exactly this type of repeat offender. We will continue to use this initiative to its fullest extent to prosecute such offenders.”

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, and the St. Pauls police all assisted the investigation.

And "continues to disregard the restrictions placed upon him". Riiiiight...we slap 'em on the wrist and then wonder why they "disregard restrictions".

Really, they can't keep him in jail with what was it...21 felony convictions? I left the possession charge out...I know that's not a felony. Silly stuff, with the government trying to brag and in their brag they show how silly the criminal justice system can be.

Next story will be "Due to the expensive of runnng our prisons, we will be letting non violent offenders out" Oh yea, that story has already run...............

Most of the folks in our prisons weren't violent offenders before they were put in. Governments nature is to make it self more powerful. The only way to accomplish this with our form of government is to reduce the power of the populace, this is being done by making more and more folks 2nd class citizens with less rights...how? ... put more folks in jail.

Don't know blume357, I heard all of em are innocent. ALL kidding aside, all have been adjudicated and convicted. Most had records prior to incarceration. Kind of look at it as they have made a conscience decisions to commit crimes. They knew the deal! There is the anomaly that some really didn't but usually the Judge/D.A sorts that out with a pre sentencing hearing.
You also have a part of society that think its cool o have been in the BIG House. Sorry thing about it is that some of the younger generation look up to some of these people. Heck it's even in some of there music. (If you want to call it that)
