If you carry a hammer, all problems look like nails.

Hey guys,

Was curious how many/if any of you carried less-than-lethal alternatives to your sidearm?

I must admit - I find it odd to only have a firearm as opposed to a full rig of OC Spray, Baton, and the ever popular taser. I don't feel like wearing the belt on my off time though, however do want to carry less-than-lethal.

As some of you know i'm a dealer for most major brands ie: 5.11 tactical, ASP, etc. so if you have a suggestion its easy for me to get my hands on. (PM Me if you need anything i'll do wholesale +$1+shipping)

I didn't start this thread to advertise - really looking for some feedback. I have an ASP Key Defender OC spray on order, and have considered ordering a Taser C2.

Any ideas, comments, suggestions appreciated.

Fox OC spray. That stuff is the most horrid I've been hit with, and I've been hit with quite a few brands doing security over the years...

FOX FIVE point THREE is harsh!

IMO:
FOX Labs --- aka chemical burn in a can
Defense Tech (red can, aka first defense)
Sabre Red

I've been hit with all and FOX brings the pain! Unfortunately they don't offer much for off duty carry.

A knife in each pocket is the extent of my extra arsenal. I also have a black belt but never mastered catching a bullet between my teeth.

I am a little old and can't walk to good so I always have a cane, (Bubba Stik) , it could be a very good weapon. Wouldn't want to try to use it because it isn't made from soft candy there for it wouldn't digest very easy. I am always armed one way or another. I don't give trash so will not take trash. Be respectful at all time and all cases. One of my heroes said "Walk softly and carry a big stick"

In addition to my H&K USP 40, I always have a pocket knife and try to keep an LED flashlight handy too. I suppose the light could be used as a non-lethal... but, its size doesn't make it all that much of a deterrent. And truthfully… if someone gets close enough to use this flashlight for defense—you’d better be good with your fist! Other than that, unless you consider a boot a non-lethal weapon… no, I don’t carry anything specifically.

I carry a Pepper Blaster made by Kimber.

I don't know a lot about it but it has two charges that are supposed to "blast" an OC type substance at 90mph and then it sticks. This is supposed to be fast enough to not create a backspray and I like that idea.

I always carry a knife and OC with me when I'm packin', and I almost always have a knife and OC when I'm not packin'.

OC is good, but one does need to know it's limits and where it fits in terms of force. There are some disreputable folks out there who would have one believe it's a magical wonder spray that wards off rapists, vampires, and the tax man.

Knives aren't consider non-lethal under the law, but my modest FMA experience shows me I can use one in a less than lethal manner.

- Strike with the flat
- Strike with the spine
- Strike with the butt (the knives, not yours)
- Slash
- Stab

+1

OC doesn't have consistent results- and for no apparent reason. IE: During training we had to be sprayed with it. Some of us (not myself, cause i'm too macho) were screaming like little girls. OK, yea I was screaming...

Others- had a "its annoying but its not too bad" and one guy was completely unphased- could walk, talk, see just fine...

Drugs are also a factor with in street OC failures.

im in the market for a tazer. I need one for when i bartend at nights and its unwise for me to have a gun. I break up fights often and sometimes and just get mean drunks that dont like being told to leave. Being a bartender means im responsable for everyone in the bar.Can anybody recommend something that would fit on my belt comfortably ..and rechargable?
thanks in advanced

Well I carry my hand gun, but the only purpose it serves is to show off to the budies. I have never had to use any self defense..i'm a small town Okie..but if it came down to it I would probable take the beating and save my self the time in court.

this is what I carry..
The Runt! Only 3.25" tall (mini sized) Uses 3 CR123A Lithium Batteries
(included FREE) FREE Nylon Holster --Available in: 350,000 -650,000 - 950,000 volts

I use the 650,000 volt one. I have not had the opportunity to use it.

I have a lot of respect for someone that's willing to fight the good fight. Many people are too quick to pull a gun. Most of us don't carry to defend against simple battery. I'd mix it up with someone bare knuckle before even thinking of drawing, I carry for the guy who decides it would be easier to rob me with a knife, gun, or even a bat...or the group of 5 that for whatever reason want to hurt me...

You're fighting the good fight and in the tussle your handgun is exposed, falls out of the holster, or becomes known to the other guy. Who's to say that they won't take advantage of that golden opportunity to disarm you and use the gun against you or someone else later on?

I'm not saying that if anyone threatens to punch you that you need to shoot them but you are dealing with this from a position of power and that should help you avoid getting into a fistfight.

My actions don't rest on hypothetical issues. Should my weapon become exposed, or fall out of the holster (don't see how that could happen) then i'll have to deal with it then. I can't justify showing my cards (weapon) to avoid a fist fight. I carry a weapon on duty and personally and just because the threat of losing my weapon exists doesn't make it probable.

I'd hate to explain to a jury "well, I was walking out of ____ when this person attacked me, I was carrying a gun and I thought there was a possibility he may take it from me so I drew my firearm to stop a non-deadly threat"..

I'd rather explain "I was walking out of ____ when this person attacked me. I tried to stop him, but he kept hitting me. During the struggle my lawfully concealed handgun became exposed and the person tried to take it away from me. I maintained control of the weapon and felt like he was trying to kill me. I drew my weapon and told the person to stay back- he didn't and since he had demonstrated he was willing to take my weapon away from me I was forced into shooting."

People are too quick on the trigger- i'm not saying anyone should try to be superman, but i'd much rather be in a fist fight than a gun fight...even a fist fight that I lose..

PS- All posts are referring to CCW not duty carry

... my actions don’t rest on hypothetical… people are too quick on the trigger

This entire thread is an exercise in hypothetical pondering!

In my view, IF someone jumps you on your way out of McDonalds, whether they have presented a weapon or not—their actions alone present a threat to your safety—and you would be justified in defending yourself.

However, IF the attacker was a 90 lbs. grandma, hitting you with her purse—your best course of action would be to put distance between yourself and your attacker and retreat to safety (out of the reach of her swing!). Your response would require neither use of a lethal or non-lethal force. You can deescalate the situation simply by avoiding the confrontation and putting distance between you and your attacker.

IF the attacker is a 300 lbs., 7’ man—your response would obviously be quite different! It might require the use of force. OR, it might simply require you putting distance between yourself and your attacker and making a fast retreat to safety.

Bottom line, every hypothetical OR real situation will be different and will require the use of common sense. BUT, you should avoid a confrontation if at all possible. Most altercations resulting in fisticuffs could have been avoided! Cooler heads CAN and DO prevail where there is a willingness to remain calm. And, with a deadly weapon on your hip there is NO place for macho BS!

If you CC, the burden of responsibility is on you to avoid situations that could escalate—and at the highest point of escalation could result in someone losing their life. Even if they've insulted your momma—your best course of action is to avoid escalating the situation and avoid the confrontation!

I think you misread, or misinterpreted the information. I'm not insinuating, or implying a fight over an insult, a look, whatever. I was implying going "bare knuckle" with someone who attacks for no reason, or for an unjust reason. I was replying to the person who said he'd take a beating to save himself the trouble in court. To me that is absolutely not being macho. Furthermore, postings here should be taken as avoidance has failed, and retreat is not possible, i'm not talking bar brawls...

I agree with a weapon on your hip there is no room to be macho- hence defending yourself without the use of a weapon. I'm sort of taken back by your post and don't understand where your coming from to be completely honest...
