If you carry a gun you must read this.

Bttbbob - Just finished reading it on said forum. Dropped in over here to see it again.

This is a good read.

A very good read. Riveting. Good, REAL down-to-earth advice from someone who really seems to have firsthand knowledge.

I was especially intrigued by his advice on when to draw:

When to draw

Despite warnings I often see on the Net I have yet to encounter an instance in which a hold up man called the police to report his intended victim threatened to shoot him. Thugs do not want to come into contact with the police. They may already be wanted or realize chances are good they have been identified in a recent robbery. Or what ever. They are not going to call the police if you draw on them.

Supposed two guys are approaching you in a parking lot and do the classic fan out maneuver. You indicate you have a weapon by clearing your gun hand and fanning your jacket at them. They are not discouraged. DRAW!

I am not saying you should pull your gun out, assume a Weaver stance, and scream "That's close enough motherfuckers!" What I am saying is draw your gun and hold it beside your leg as you start to move to cover. I am very fond of telephone poles. Anything will do though. They will see this. They will remember they have to be somewhere else. They will not call the police.

Then you can just put your gun back in the holster and go back to whatever you were doing like nothing happened. Why? Because nothing did happen. A happening is when shots are fired.

Do not hesitate to draw. If you are somewhere you are supposed to be and someone appears who is not supposed to be there like a closed business show him the end of your gun. Could it be Mother Teresa looking for her lost cat behind your closed business? No it is some motherfucker up to no good. He won't call the police to report he was prowling a location when a guy ran him off.

However - I would caution folks to make the distinction between being robbed by a 'hold up man' vs most other kinds of (usually ego-driven) encounters.

A classic example of an encounter where at least one of the combatants is being driven by ego may be found in the post below:

http://www.usacarry.com/forums/concealed-carry-discussion/20807-ccw-incident-input-please.html

As the truck passed by us, he threw his truck into park, squealing the tires, blocking in my truck parked in the parking space from behind. The driver then opened the driver side store and stormed out approaching us yelling in a hostile manner “WHAT THE **** DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME!”.

In this case, the aggressor was definitely being driven by ego. And when the gun was drawn on him, he did not "decide he had someplace else to be." He stood a few yards away and called the police on the guy who drew the gun.

(Caveat: I'm not entirely convinced that we're getting the whole story in my sample post. I suspect from the way it was told that there may have been ego in play on both sides. But my point remains.)

I think the boldface text above, where the author talks about moving for cover vs doing a "John Wayne," speaks volumes. A perfect illustration of a practical response vs an ego-driven response.

Cold as it sounds it comes down to 'do unto others before they do unto you'. And he is totally right in that if you shoot somebody SHUT UP AND GET A LAWYER.

Thanks for sharing this powerful message, it just may save a life! It sure gave me something to think about!

Excellent advice.... You can tell he is someone who KNOWS how the real world really is, not like some on here who will condemn him and accuse him of advocating BRANDISHING!

The guy who authored the piece has my respect, and I appreciate you Bttbbob for posting it. I put it in my fav's.

The ideas that some here have been scorned for are all recommended, even if indirectly, in the piece. Have a gun to up odds of survival despite contrary signage, or laws; as you stated, Axeanda45, do not worry about brandishing; and on and on. I wonder if anyone here is going to call the author of the piece some sort of Internet or Keyboard "Rambo", etc. ...Mr. "C..."?

Should be part of all firearms training courses. Nothing like hearing from one who has actual experience in weapons handling.

I have John Farnam the well known instructor from Defensive Tactics International and author
on my radio show this week. We will be reading this and getting his take.
