If you ask “why would teachers need training with guns”

If you ask “why would teachers need training with guns” you must not have been watching the news or reading various articles that have been in the news for the last month or so.

It basically comes down to this situation; all of the past mass shootings have been at gun free zones, schools included. The one in Aurora was a prime example, the shooter went to the one and only movie theatre that was a gun free zone, he bypassed three other theaters that were closer to his home and went specifically to that theater that was a gun free zone.

You’ve got to ask yourself this question; where would I feel safer from a deranged madman bent on doing harm to you, a school where there is no one there to deter this mad man and he proceeds to kill school children without and resistance or a school where either a teacher or a security person is there to resist this mad man before he can do harm to the students?

I myself would rather have a means to protect myself rather than just laying down and pleading for my life and that of my students.
Over the past month or so more and more, both schools and teachers all over the country are requesting both formal training concerning firearm training to obtain a concealed carry permit and obtain an armed security presence at the schools.

Granted it’s not what we grew up with, but as we both know times a quite different these days. Do you want to be a victim or a person who can at least try to defend yourself and the people around you?

Guns aren't rocket science, I would hope a teacher would have enough sense to not shoot the kids without any additional training.
I do agree some training would be better then none, it shouldn't be needed or required.
MOST people are smarter then you (or they) think.

First, "all of the past mass shootings" have not been in gun free zones. That is not true.

Second, terrorists pick their victims and then go to where they are without consideration of whether it is a gun free zone. to think otherwise is highly naive.

Third, I have no problem with allowing teachers to carry concealed for personal protection, but they are not qualified to be armed security. We have too many wannabe Wyatt Earps now.

Fourth, if we need professional security to protect our schools then we need to employ professionals to provide security. Future walmart greeters with guns are not the same thing.

I have no problems with people carrying guns for self-protection without any training requirement at all. It just isn't a problem here in WA state, where no training is required to obtain a CPL, and a CPL is not required to open carry. However, I do believe that training should be required for a person to protect others as part of their job. My personal opinion....make it an option for anyone employed at a school to obtain training to be certified to carry a gun at the school for the protection of others as part of their job. They can volunteer if they wish. If they don't volunteer for and pass the training, teacher leaves the gun locked in the car, or in a storage area inside the school building during working hours.

I to believe school personnel should be allowed to carry. I also believe that they need some minimum training. In states that require training for a CC permit, that may be enough general training. But I would recommend a standard course for the special conditions of carrying in public institutions and offices. The carry permits of these trained personnel should have endorsements showing they are qualified for such carry at their workplace. Rather like a motor endorsement on a drivers license. The NRA could be a big help there with a standard that could be used in all states and locations. This can provide better coordination and communications during an event. I would view this as a minimum requirement. I believe something like fire drills may be appropriate, but directed at an invading shooter. Many people will go Bat S@@t over this. Burying children and school personnel should be sufficient reward for these people.

And it is not limited to schools and such. Many employers prohibit employees from being able to defend themselves at work. Again, I think there should maybe be a license endorsement of a special course in handling armed response in the special environments. There should probably be some debate about open vs concealed carry. There are advantages to both.

I would also hope that because of this, students would be given a more rational view of firearms for personal defense. Perhaps more places will provide a rational and factually correct education about firearms and firearm safety to our children. So they don't have to learn by accidentally shooting a sibling simply because they had stupid parents..

I like the idea of optional security training for teachers who wish to avail themselves of it. it would have to be ongoing though, not a one-shot certification.

But I would still allow all teachers to carry concealed in school for personal protection.

Everyone should be able to protect themselves. The fact that there are children in the building doesn't change the outcome for me.
