If not a S&W MP Shield then a...?

I want S&W MP Shield but can't find one in stock anywhere. I like the size, shape and feel. If I can't find one I'm thinking of a LC9.
What other small 9mm should I look at?

Taurus PT-709/740
I have the 740 and compared it side-by-side to the M&P Shield. They are virtually the same size. The Shield was definitely a better quality piece, however I can say I have had zero issues w/ my Taurus PT-740.

I've got a Shield so I'm going to recommend waiting until you can get one. They're worth the wait, terrific pistol! If not, the M&Pc is pretty darn nice too.

Nano

I just picked up a Beretta Nano yesterday. Have not shot it yet. It is a very clean design without any protrusions. A perfect CCW gun. I think it is about the same size, maybe slightly smaller then the Shield.

I would suggest looking up hickok45 on YouTube. He gives a fair review of both and likes them both.

Cheers

I'd wait to get the Shield but if you can't wait the Nano or Kahr CM9 are great pistols. I've owned both but liked the Nano best.

My son recently bought a Walther PPS. A really, really nice pistol. The Shield was not on display at the store at that time, but both appear to be similar.

Kahr PM/CM/MK9, Kimber Solo, Sig P938. The Ruger is a quality piece and a nice looking gun with rounded edges for snag free use but it has weaker sight picture and imo not as accurate from what I've seen than the S&W, it has a mag disconnect and S&W doesn't (if the mag falls out while engaged in a gunfight you can't fire it), it has a long trigger pull and S&W doesn't, it comes with one mag and S&W comes with two, you can't rack the slide with it on safe like the S&W, it has a plastic guide rod and the S&W is steel, the LC9 is hammer fired and the S&W is striker. I would wait until you can get your hands on a S&W. Look to buy online and have it shipped to your dealer.

This.

The PPS is VERY similar to the Shield, and arguably a bit higher quality and uncannily accurate for its size. I have one, and love it. Some people complain about the magazine release but I am finding that I prefer it. If I could buy a Glock 19 with the walther mag release I probably would to have a higher capacity option. The PPS is typically $75-$100 more. But I am quite happy with mine. It is a very underrated option in my opinion...

I agree. the Walther PPS is an awesome gun and is really underrated by most. I was impressed with its quality and its accuracy. The magazine release is not an issue with me. I find it very convenient.

There are plenty of similar size alternatives. However, if you already like the way the Shield feels then I would encourage you to get one because it is amazing in it's accuracy for a small gun. It's design does an exceptional job of taming recoil. Of the guns mentioned thus far in this forum, it has arguably the best trigger with the exception of the Solo. The LC9 is a reliable and extremely popular choice but the trigger pull is about a week long. The Solo functions best with premium self defense ammo only. My Shield has ate every brand I've fed it. More importantly, it is actually a joy to shoot clip after clip through. If you can find a gun of this size that actually becomes one of your preferred guns to take to the range all afternoon then in my opinion you've found something special regardless of who makes it.

Bersa Thunder Pro 9mm Ultra Compact. Perfect fit for my hands.... oh.... but then... it's your hands you want to fit, isn't it?
Bersa's a wonderful, reliable weapon. Price-wise it's better than most others, also.

was at the gun shop satuerday looking and i was bout to go shield wise. but the salesman told medont. the shield has not got all the bugs worked out of it yet. everyone they sold has broken. one man never even got a shot off and the extractor fell off. he said wait a year before i get one to let the bugs work out. i got the xd sub, love it. old lady got p238.

I just got the M&P Shield last week (I believe it was the last one in St. Louis and even on the internet) and finally got to shoot it yesterday. Wow. I really like this gun. I would definitely wait. I had the LC9 and just could not get past the long trigger. If you can get used to the lc9 trigger, it is also a great carry gun. Another thing besides the trigger (which is the main reason I got the shield), there is considerably less kick the Shield over the LC9, which makes it more fun to shoot. I put a 100 rounds thru it yesterday with no issues. Can't say enough good things about it, except maybe I should have got the .40, but they are admittedly very hard to find

Try a S&W 909. Not too many of them around (made for 2 years in the mid 90's) but they do pop up now and then on classifieds for about $300-$400 (sometime less than $300 even). It is a mid-size gun, single stack so pretty thin. Conceals easily for me. I prefer the Glock "feel in hand" but the 909 is nice if I need a thinner profile. If you need a compact size, then try the 908. It is a compact version of the 909, can be found for about the same price as the 909.
