I work on Federal Property.....

Hey folks,
I'm considering getting my CCW, but I have one major problem. Most of my work is on Federal property where CCW permits are specifically mentioned in their "no weapons" policies as being invalid.

Would you bother getting a permit if carrying was only going to happen after you got home every day?

I wonder what the rules and laws would be about leaving it in your car ? In Georgia, you can legally carry it to and from work in the car without a permit. I know Florida has a similar law but the firearm must be locked away and unloaded so to speak.

I can't exercise everyday because of work related matters. Should I not bother exercising on the others days as well?

absolutely. Too bad you can't carry at work but the thing about carrying a gun whenever possible is that you don't know when you are going to need it.

Depends if the property is leased or owned and what Federal Protective Service has there for jurisdictional authority, if there authority extends to the parking lot our stops at the front doors.

Yes... Absolutely, regardless of being able to carry at work or not! I totally agree with the above comments. I would definitely check the laws on keeping your firearm locked in your vehicle.

so the federal law is clear that you may not carry inside federal buildings, that being said. The parking lot is not part of the building. also, your company policy can restrict you to have it in the car, so check that. Since that will get you fired.
but the first part will land you in jail or a big fine.

with the information you provided, there is nothing very concrete that you can get from the forum.

what state are you in?
do you have sings posted at the entrance of the of the parking lot?
is your building a secure building where you go thru a guard post?

So this should not be a show stopper for you getting your CCW.

Oh hell no I'd just decide to be defenseless all the time

I'm a military officer who works on a military base. This base has huge signs all over that state carrying a concealed weapon is against military regulations and will subject you to a fine or prison or both. I don't carry when I go to work, which is a shame since I drive an hour each way.

That being said. I carry just about all the time when not at work. So to answer the OP's question, unless you live at work, get the permit.

Are criminals only going to attack you at work on Federal property?

there was a guy that used to work in my building that was fired, made NCIS badges, bought gear, and came on base w/ weapons, then proceeded to hassle his ex-boss. it does happen, not often though.

the base down here has no signage at all, but is still illegal. wish i could carry to/from work as well and leave it locked in the truck. still carry anytime i'm not going to/from work.

jhodge83, I think you missed the point of my post. Please read it carefully, notice what I highlighted:

The OP was questioning about getting a CCW permit because he could not carry at work which was on Federal property. My point was, there is the rest of the world remaining that was not Federal property. Criminals are out there too!

ahh....my apologies...i missed the "only" part.

Thanks for the replies, folks. For clarification, my vehicle is on property and in some cases, searched as I enter, so keeping it locked in there is a non-option. ;(

On the bright side, I went and submitted my fingerprints, fee's and paperwork yesterday.

Yep,
My wife is a federal employee. Her gun is locked up in the car while she's working.

If you can't even have it in your car I would park off site somewhere if possible.

I work for the feds and if the parking lot is federal property the same rules would probably apply as it would carrying into a federal building, you wouldn't be allowed to have it secured in your vehicle. Now this applies to the Bureau of Prisons, where I work, obviously we can't bring personal weapons inside, but we can't even bring them on the prison property. This brings up a whole other issue of how the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act allows us to carry off duty where we are legally allowed to do so without a CCW permit, but the Bureau of Prisons won't allow us to have our weapon at work or provide any secure place to store them, which basically negates the essence of the law. Maybe a post for a different forum and I got a little off topic, sorry about that.
