I live in Michigan near the Indiana border. Indiana to my knowledge is not a traditional open carry State as Michigan is. You have to have a permit to carry a handgun and that permit allows you to carry either openly or concealed. You didn't say where you are from but Indiana recognizes all permits whether resident or non resident and does issue non resident permits.

There may be some further information on the Indiana section of this board. According to alduane, open carry does not sound very common or or even accepted in Indiana. Given that, it's hard to say what law enforcement will say or do when dealing with an open carry situation.

The only areas of Indiana where there can be blanket prohibitions on OC are in a couple of bastions of Liberalism and economic depression (but I repeat myself) where the politicos from there managed to carve out an exception for themselves in the otherwise state-wide pre-emption law. Unless you're in Gary or South Bend, I think you're pretty damn safe on a city street with your Indiana (or absolutely any other) gun license.

Now, vis-a-vis open vs. concealed carry in Indiana, as has been said, the law stands mute, which, as any first year law student can tell you means it's not prohibitted, and what's not prohibitted is implicitly permitted, which is the default in a Constitutional Republic. On the other hand, it may or may not be seen as socially acceptable in one area or another, and of course, anything that you do that's not socially acceptable is liable to bring you to the attention of the police, police which may or may not be entirely up to speed on all of the nuances of Indiana firearms laws.

Indiana law standing mute on open vs. concealed carry has been the standard for decades. That could mitigate or militate. Either it's a common fact drilled into every graduate of every police academy graduate in the state, or it's deemed so obvious that no one ever bothers to mention it to the new recruits. Regardless, you bring yourself to the attention of police, you're taking your life and liberty in your hands. Feel like rolling the dice?

"Indiana is not a traditional open carry state. However, with an Indiana permit, open carry is legal."
"Complete state preemption of firearms law except localities may regulate the carrying of firearms in land, buildings, or other real property they own or administer.

The only restriction that I know of that South Bend has "carved" out for itself is the City County building since it's attached to the Courthouse. Indiana's passed a pretty broad preemption law concerning local ordinances.

Or as Dirty Harry would say, "Do I feel lucky, well do ya?" Unless you have a real need to carry openly, I personally believe it's better if no one ever knows you're armed until you need to use it.

I would also keep in mind the fact that Indiana issues a permit to carry a handgun and not a concealed carry permit like Michigan does. This could lead to the conclusion that if you need a permit to carry a handgun then you would need a permit to carry either openly or concealed.

If you're wondering if Indiana has laws like some States that penalize you for not concealing your firearm if you have a permit, then the answer is no.

Here is the link to the law in Indiana. In short, you must be licensed to carry concealed or open. Indiana is a shall issue, easy to get a license if your not a felon. Two types hunting or personal protection.

Still Waiting on the State Police to issue my permit...filed 4 weeks ago this Friday...

Indiana does not issue a permit. They issue a License To Carry a Handgun (LTCH). I hope you went for the lifetime license. As others have said Indiana law is silent on method of carry. You must be licensed to carry CC or OC.

I just got back from Indiana where I OC'd everywhere I went. Not one problem. I never had a problem during the 2 1/2 yeaPrs I lived there either.

Indiana has recently passed some great laws. One being a bill that prohibits employers from telling employees that they can not have a firearm in their vehicle on company property. The other prohibits local .gov's from banning firearms in places like city parks, trails, the zoo etc..

Beau is correct.

Top center of license says " LICENSE TO CARRY HANDGUN"

Centered under that "STATE OF INDIANA"

Then the following...
"The licensee is hereby licensed by The Indiana State Police to carry on their person or in
a vehicle, any handgun lawfully possessed by Licensee. You are REQUIRED BY LAW
to notify the State Police, in writing, within 60 days of a change of name and/or address.
Application made through ??????? CO SHERIFF DEPT".

I personally see no reason (for me) to open carry. I also don't see a reason to walk around displaying cash hanging out of my pockets. I guess I just don't
feel comfortable 'advertising'. If I ever needed to bring a weapon to bear, I want it to be an absolute and definitive surprise to everyone but me.

I've had a License To Carry since the 90's, and in that time, I've only seen ONE person OC here in Indiana, who did not have a badge displayed on his/her
belt next to the weapon. That one person heeled a Ruger Blackhawk .45 4.5" in a slightly angled horizontal draw abdomen rig, (sort of like a very large driving
holster). He looked a tad bit obvious, but he also looked comfortable with who he was, and was friendly and outgoing. I approached him, politely introduced
myself & asked why he went OC'ing with such a weapon, he smiled and responded that it was the one & only weapon he owned and that this was just his
favorite and most comfortable rig to carry with. OK, amen.

To each their own, right?

Anyhow, in most Indiana Cities/Towns it should be fine to OC, but there ARE a few places where OC is supposedly restricted/prohibited, so before doing so, a person better check local ordinances out...a phone call to local LEO should tell you what you need to know.

i live in northwest indiana and i oc everywhere i go. i've never had a problem with any leo's or buisnesses. whenever i get checked by dnr while fishing i hand them my boat reg, fishing liscense, and permit. they (meaning dnr and leo) would rather you hand them the permit when getting pulled over for a traffic stop or getting checked by dnr rather than blurting out i have a gun. it keeps them from getting jumpy or trigger happy. i have only been asked by a leo one time in five years while ocing to see my permit. most just ask what kind of gun you got and if i like it then tell me they wish more people oced.
