I must be doing something wrong...

I finished up Christmas shopping today with my better half. I open carried my stainless PT-145 in a Fobus Paddle Holster. Plaid flannel shirt tucked in regular blue jeans. We went to Wal Mart, lunch at Arby's, Fred Myers and Target in Burlington, WA. And then, after coming home, I picked my daughter up from school, still open carrying my gun, on school property, got out of my car in front of all the school buses and moved to the passenger side so she could drive. Nobody panicked, no LEO encounters, I do think one guy in Arby's might have given me a dirty look but that might have been my imagination, nobody made a grab for my gun, and nobody shot me first.

Can someone tell me what I was doing wrong? Nothing happened to me that is supposed to happen when you open carry.... and today was a pretty dang busy day in the stores.

You forgot to hip flex and it helps if you announce to everyone that you are carrying a firearm... Preferably in some foreign language or at least a thick middle eastern accent

Please get video for us LOL :p

I don't believe anyone declares that you will be shot. But IF a crime is committed, you have raised your odds by marking yourself as a target. If you don't see it as an issue, that's purely your choice.

Sooo.... you will be able to provide an example of Joe Citizen open carrying being shot first during the commission of a crime? Until someone can come up with an example of it actually happening in real life, than I don't consider it to be any more of an issue than being struck by a flower pot thrown by a monkey.

You can open carry on school property? That would be nice!
In Washington state, with a CPL.... yes.

Navy! lmao, that's just too funny! rotflmao :haha: I needed that! Thanks

I don't have any examples - not sure there are any. I would be happy if not - but putting myself in a criminals position, I know what I would do in the situation I described. Again - if you're comfy with it, have at it.

Just relax on the couch here and tell me just when you began having these hallucinations.

WHO raised their odds of being shot by marking themselves as a target????????

You would have an old fashioned shoot out with someone else that had a firearm?

You wouldn't just wait till they left to commit the crime?

I don't think you would survive very long as a criminal...

So a swaggering swabby with a sidearm wasn't even noticed whilst out and about. Apparently you were not doing something right or all those drug induced citizens just couldn't see that far. Nice story though and a Merry Christmas! May fair winds and smooth seas be yours for the next year.

Out of all the dumb criminals in the world, jweasl would be the dumbest to pick a fight with an armed person rather than an unarmed sheep :p

Only while dropping off or picking up, correct?

In Washington, correct. We are also allowed to store our firearms in our vehicles while on school property when there for school activities.

Cowboys swagger. Swabbies usually stagger :-). Now I know what was wrong, you are right, it must have been all the legal maryjane flowing around in my state now!

:secret: The only thing I could see you doing wrong is that you were not carrying a Sig.

Don't uniform cops open carry all the time? Does their presence in a place where someone is contemplating committing a crime make them a target? I would expect that the criminal would most likely take more time over their contemplations while quietly sidling out of the proposed crime scene.

We aren't talking about police officers, they hold a completely different aspect of enforcement that civilians do not. I think I understand your post, but let's not drag the whole police OC vs civilian OC in here :)

As the OP has stated, he had no knowledge of even being noticed while open carrying. Since Okla became a open carry state, I have done so quite extensively. I have had 0 bad confrontations from either citizens or law enforcement. The only contact I have had was positive, with one that said "exercising your open carry rights, looks good. I am still getting use to seeing it." No one has reached for my gun, or made me a target or even said any disparaging comments. I carry both open and concealed, depends on what I am doing and where I am going. Carry as you wish............just carry!!!!

Happy to hear that! As I travel there often. Mother and sister live there. Just wish Arkansas would pull their collective heads out of their collective a$$'s! Tired of being one of the last states to do anything!!

Just wait...it is inevitable that sooner or later someone is going to snobbishly tell you how they carry their gun concealed and you should too. That is the HUGE majority of negative encounters I have.
