I Like Being Old!

Just received this from another friend who has gotten old.

As I've aged, I've become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend.

I have seen too many dear friends leave this world, too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.

Whose business is it, if I choose to read, or play, on the computer, until 4 AM, or sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60 &70's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love, I will.

I will walk the beach, in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves, with abandon, if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set.
They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And, I eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years, my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break, when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But, broken hearts are what give us strength, and understanding, and compassion. A heart never broken, is pristine, and sterile, and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day (if I feel like it).

MAY OUR FRIENDSHIP NEVER COME APART, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART!

i really like this post. i lost my grandmother last month, and she really enjoyed being old. and i will always remember her that way. kudos.

Oldgrunt, you said it all with this post. I may not be as old as you, but I get the wisdom from this post.

Live, unashamedly, but live!

Rock on, my Man! I'm glad to be connected in this forum to you.

Awwwwwww....that is so nice. I will remember that as I get older each day. :lazy: I can be lazy when I want to ...ah ...freedom... what a precious time to live with abandon when one is old-er.

I tell my kids I'm enjoying getting older and being a burden to them. Then they remind me to keep in mind they get to pick the nursing home. That keeps me in check.

What a wonderful post! Brought a nostalgic tear to my eye ... I'm 66, loving retirement in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, and don't envy the young, given the mess our country is in ... it's their turn to solve the world's problems, it's my turn to loaf, read, ride my motorcycle and shoot all afternoon if I want to ... Since you don't have any choice about gettin' old, you might as well enjoy it ...

This is a great post....

I had never considered myself old...On my last birthday I turned 57, and it hit me all at once...Damn! In three years, I will be 60....

If I knew I would have lived this long I would have taken better care of my body...
I would have saved more money...
Been kinder to my difficult family members...

However, all in all, I can't say I have any big regrets...

The only thing I have left on the bucket list is to purchase a motor home (we have a fifth wheel trailer now, but I'd rather have the ability to get up and move around when traveling and let the dogs move around also) and travel across the United States...North to South, East to West and then do it all over again taking a different route.

I never have had the desire to travel out of our boarders...I did spend time in Mexico before it became so dangerous...I loved to go over the border in El Passo and shop the open markets...Shame, we cannot do this any longer without worrying about the
dealers....Mexico has some unbelievable craftsmen...

I traveled from Alabama to Alaska in a camper with my family. It was a wonderful trip and our "big adventure" with three kids in the 70s. With all the beautiful country we have in North America, I have no desire to travel anywhere else. Of course, today, who can afford that kind of travel? Gas prices are high and new motor homes are terribly expensive. Also, there is so much crime now I would be uncomfortable camping like we did then. In addition to weapons, we had a big German Shepherd who didn't take kindly to anyone getting too close to us. His main problem was wanting to help me drive and wanted to see where we were going. I'm a lot older than you and all I will say is to go for it while you can! You may not get another chance.

I wish we can do that...our last driving holiday was over ten years ago now. And we only had a van at the time. I've been praying for even a not so brand new RV seeing that we go to fly-ins and conventions like the EAA AirVenture...and when I mentioned an RV, hubby booked us a hotel. :hang2: I will continue dreaming...who knows?

Well said Old Grunt. I like being older as well. Being older has allowed me to see the BS coming and deal with it accordingly.

Being 65 but looking through the eyes of a 35 year old is scary sometimes. The mind says yes, but the body says "give me a break". I also like being "older", not "old", especially when I see the world today, now, that's scary!

Age is just a number. I'll be 70 in a few more months, feel like 40, I'm content with life and couldn't ask for more. I thank the Lord that I was born and raised in America in the "best of times" enjoying all of the freedoms it had to offer. Regardless of the current events and whatever happens in my time remaining, it's exciting to know that the best day I've ever experienced in this life, will be the worst day that I'll experience throughout all eternity.

I'm only 52, but I'm running my own company with a plan to retire at 60. By then I should have new knees, hips and eyes and a few fused vertebae to get my body back to the age of my mind. I look forward to enjoying my grandkids if my boys manage to produce some for me, but until then I plan to party all over America in an RV and on my Triumph with the love of my life holding on from behind. I truly hope my boys and their kids will live in a world where they can do the same.
