OLYMPIA, Wash. -- A defensive store clerk prevented a robber from pillaging his Olympia store by hitting him over the head with a metal folding chair Wednesday night.

At the 76 Gas Station on Pacific Avenue and Boulevard Road, police said a male suspect wearing sunglasses and a stocking cap walked into the store 10 minutes before midnight, and flashed a 3-4 inch folding knife.

Clerks told police the suspect demanded money and tried to jump over the counter.

Alarmed, one of the clerks grabbed a metal folding chair and hit the suspect over the head, stunning him and knocking both his sunglasses and hat off.

Police said the suspect managed to walk out of the store and has not been arrested.

He is described as a white male, 18-25 years-old, 5-foot 10 inches tall and about 170 pounds with black hair.

Call either Detective Chris Johnstone (360-709-2793) or Crime Stoppers (360-493-4333) if you have any information. You may remain anonymous.

The fact the guy walked out of the store bothers me... they shoulda hit him twice.

That is too funny. Tried to rob a store with a folding knife huh... I guess the clerk was not real intimidated by it. He is lucky they did not jump on him, and beat him to death with the folding chair.

Lets see here, a folding chair has significant reach and shielding capabilities when going against a knife. Now, the next robber may not bring a knife to a folding chair fight.

People are getting desperate! Does no one out there understand this? High unemployment and forecloses....when ppl loose it all, they loose it. That or they are just junkies looking to pay for their next High. I'm glad this guy defended himself and not tuck tail and run. Whomever this thief was, I hope he learned his lesson. That,or next time he'll just bring a gun.

Here's another.... Dude is lucky the perp is just some stupid punk that never practices.

SEATTLE -- A man in Seattle's Central District managed to fend off three muggers after threatening them with a hammer, say Seattle police.

The man said he was walking near 27th Avenue East and East Marion Street around 10 p.m. Friday. He passed a group of men standing at the corner; when he walked by, he said three of the men began following him.

The victim said when he turned around to talk to the suspects, one of them took out a handgun and demanded he hand over his bag. That's when the victim reached into his bag and took out a hammer, holding it high in an effort to intimidate the suspects.

According to the victim, when the suspects repeated their demand, he charged toward them.

One of the suspects fired the gun, but the victim was not struck by any bullets. The suspects then fled north on 27th Avenue East.

The victim ran a few blocks and called 9-1-1. Responding officers searched the area, but they didn't find the suspects.

The suspects were described as three black males in their early 20s. One suspect was 6'0", about 140-150 pounds and wore a black hooded winter coat and khaki pants. He was armed with a gun. The second suspect was about 5'8", 150 pounds and wore a black coat and black pants. No description was given for the third suspect.

Moral of the story, a good hammer is much easier to conceal than a folding chair...

A hammer is the ultimate self defense weapon. You dont even need to conceal it because after all, who is going to suspect the innocent man walking around with a tool belt and hammer is actually an armed man who can defend himself? I think the hammer also has a good deterrent factor to it so Navy would much approve.

A man was beaten to death by three men in Seattle recently. Three black guys showed up on a security cam trying to hide stuff in a dumpster near by. They are still looking for those guys. I wonder if these are the same three?

Interesting thought. The attacks were only 4 miles apart and both were right off of MLK Jr Way.

Im about 45 min out from the city... and try to keep it that way.

Never underestimate blunt force trauma from a ten pound metal chair. There is a reason why professional wrestlers end up with so many broken bones.
