I cannot believe they posted this

You have to consider where they are. The environs of New York city, the protectorate of Nanny Bloomberg. Great way to tell criminals where to look for things to steal. Anyone that gets burglarized should bring a law suit.

They tried to do this in Illinois with our F.O.I.D (firearm owners id cards). But it got overturned by the courts and made illegal to do so. It makes those without them even bigger targets because the bad guys know there's no guns in the house.

Like the cartoon stated: My Neighbor doesn't have guns --->

They might just as well draw up a map for robbers showing which homes are gun less.
The unarmed in those neighborhoods should be really upset with those charts.

That just goes to show you the lack of mental stability in the libtards up there. Wish I was a hacker. :o)
If I lived up there, I'd put a sign in my yard. Everyone would know that I was armed... just in case they may have planned a break in at my place... that way they might pick on the brainless gun-grabber that lives next door. I believe they deserve what they get.
I also believe that we're all partially responsible for allowing this anti-constitution, anti-brainwave crap to go this far.

I am a resident of Dutchess County; just north of Putnam and Westchester Counties and I cannot believe that they are able to obtain and print your name and address with that information. I wonder if a class action lawsuit against the paper is feasible for all those listed? Would the NRA be willing to help with a lawyer to file such a suit? If my and my neighbors' names were on that list I bet we would be looking into that option.

Whoever published this is holds a huge liability if any of those gun owners are robbed and their guns stolen. I'd be sueing them so hard they'd all end up working for me. Then I'd fire them.

Hopefully someone posts in the same news forum something like this: DEAR CRIMINALS, WOULD BE BURGLARS, Don't risk getting shot! Please be careful and do choose a residence without a dot. It would benefit you to stay away from the dotted properties.

As a law-abiding citizen, I'm not worried about where the permits are. I'm more worried about where they aren't.

This data is all public information. It probably is the same in your state. This is the age of the data steam and we're all in it one way or another. Every purchase you make is part of the data base. If you're using cash you might be a little better hidden but the withdraws and deposits at the bank are recorded. Every gun purchased and registered is in the data stream. You home purchase and appraisal value is a matter of public record. And on and on.

Once the FOIA is filed there is nothing to stop someone from publishing the data. Not saying it doesn't suck, I'm just saying, don't be surprised!

So which is it, bad guys will be dissuaded from breaking into the homes were someone may own a gun, or bad guys will be attracted to homes with guns to try to steal them?

Under NYS law the names and addresses of concealed carry permit holders are open to "public inspection" which means publication as well as discovery. Unless the purpose of the publication of such information can be directly related to a threat of some sort, the publication of such information is not actionable.

The only solution is to have the state law changed to make such information private and not subject to public disclosure.

If you don't approve of the Journal News, the paper that did this, then you will really enjoy this article! The author lists the name, address, and various other information about the editor that approved this story, as public record. Like they say, what goes around, comes around.

That is the most awesomest link I ever seent on the interwebs! Some great ideas flowin' through the Comments section. Particularly liked this one:

What next?

How about an interactive map showing who has been a Planned Parenthood customer? Doesn’t really matter what PP services each person received…roughly 90 percent of their clientele comes for abortion, so it would be entirely fair and consistent to create an interactive Community Aborters Map.

It’s long past the time where this game is played using the same rules for both sides.

What a great Christmas evening, jus' sittin' 'round watchin' the VH1 Married With Children marathon while readin' some of the best entertainment the web has to offer in that Comments section during the commercials. Man, it's a Wonderful Life! LOL

The local news in my area did similar in North Carolina, didn't really hurt my feelings or upset me. I wouldn't worry about the BG breaking in to steal your weapon, he/she is more apt to stay away knowing that the homeowner is armed. There just are too many anti gunners that would make better targets for them. See now the BG can see this too.

They tried to do this in Illinois with our F.O.I.D (firearm owners id cards). But it got overturned by the courts and made illegal to do so. It makes those without them even bigger targets because the bad guys know there's no guns in the house.

It was Madam Madigan who was going to release the names and addresses of all FOID card holders to the AP per a FOIA request. Quinn of all people signed a law preventing the release after downstate politicians crapped a brick.

This, in NY, does not surprise me though. Wonder how many of these peoples' homes will be targeted by criminals (or nutty liberals). "Freedom of information" is the reasoning behind this. So, if the government is so transparent (ha) and information should be free, then why are nuclear weapons designs classified? Unit designations of military units like Delta (it's not Delta, probably disguised as some logistics or unit that acts in support of combat troops), etc. How about our own President's college transcripts? I don't want any of that stuff to be public (except Obama's transcripts) but I don't want the whole damn country to know I own a gun and where I live either.

So which is it, 1. if criminals know a homeowner is armed they will avoid that house, or 2. if criminals know a homeowner is armed they will target that house?
