I avoided a shooting this morning

Documenting this case with the police starts a paper trail. We now have the event recorded for future reference if needed. <<Still smells fishy>> Pass the crackers would ya Treo?

I don't think it sounds fishy at all.

When I cleaned carpets for a living (waaaaaay back about the crack of the dawn of time) I got a wrong address and instructions to let myself into the house and begin cleaning (supposed to be a vaccant).

Million to one odds the the people that owned the house at the address I went to had their front door unlocked.

I knew something was up when I walked in and the house was furnished so I stopped in my tracks and announced myself and got everything straightened out but it did happen so I don't think it's that far fetched for it to happen again

This is a post I created on pg4 but it had to be approved because I was new. I am reposting since I am sure no oone reads back once they have past that page up.

Here is a really good tac light. This will soon replace the one I currently keep on my night stand which is a 220 lumens for my SKS.
Like I said in my other post you made more correct actions then wrong.

First thing I would be doing is firing my dog and kicking myself for leaving the door unlocked. Second, I would be calling another alarm company because the one I had failed!! I like my sp101 as well but for my lay out, my shotgun would have been going for a ride for something with advanced notice. Sounds like you had other criteria to consider (son getting home at that time, neighbors who party, etc). It turned out way better for them that they entered your dwelling than it would have had it been mine. I may not have shot but a naked man at my age holding a shotgun following behind a pissed off dog while your were drunk is something that may stay with you for the rest of your natural days and it wouldnt be pretty.

Thanks for putting that image in my mind Chief.

Haha! Love this!

I'm glad you didn't have to shoot. The civil **** storm you would have faced afterwards would have ruined you.

I read these threads and all I can think about is " where in the heck do all of you live and why do you live there?". Maybe I am fortunate, maybe I am lucky--who knows? 70 years old and no one has attacked me, no one has broken into my homes, no one has ever tried to rob me, no one has ever got out of their car after me, no one has ever robbed a restaurant, a movie theater, an atm etal that I was at, no one has ever caused me a minute of cause to even think about a firearm. Am I alone? Are all of you living in some kind of hell? Sorry if I offend or whatever, but I feel like I am always reading a script from a TV program--made up for the public.

Who was the Jackass that left the front door hanging open? I have to assume that it was left unlocked and these kids just walked in, other wise there would not have been the situation in the first place. If that happened to me, the 911 call would be to get my wife's foot out of my rectum!

Do I smell troll?

Guess those kids had better be glad they did not stumble onto my house because someone would have been dead. 4 to 1 are not good odds and I am going to shoot first and then clean up the ***** later.

lucky for those kids. but who knows could have been a cover. lots of smart crooks out there
Home invasions are on the rise, after seeing this movie I was totally freaked.
Watch the movie "Strangers" I bet you lock your doors even during the day.
Crooks are smart and when you have a team working together it almost always ends
up badly for someone.

Laughing out loud thanks chief1297 I really enjoyed your reply. I will have to look for more of your posts.

It's always a good idea to have clues!

Two female voices.
'Nice doggy; nice doggy'
Everybody was standing in plain sight and had beers.

Those are all clues that should have told you it wasn't a, 'life or death' situation you were walking into. Walking into the event with your pistol in your pocket is, also, a serious tactical mistake. I think you might benefit greatly from reading something like, 'The NRA's Guide To Personal Protection Inside The Home'. I'm not going to bore you with how I would have handled that situation; but, you do have me wondering, 'Why' your front door was open?

I've got an SP-101, too; but it's not for investigating, 'things that go bump in the night'. For that I've got a G-21, 30 rounds of ammo, a fully charged cell phone, and a 250 lumens tactical light resting on the table next to my shoulder and within arm's reach. As for the, 'nice doggy'? We've, also, got a nice doggy. It's called a, 'Pit Bulldog'. Back in 1990 our home was suddenly invaded. I didn't have to do anything; our two Pit Bulldogs did all the work for me. If the situation weren't so serious I might have just sat down and had myself a real good laugh.

You are very fortunate.. yea I live in Raleigh, I guess that qualifies as some kind of hell. I have had my car broken into twice. Once the perverts punched a hole in the windshield cause they couldn't figure out the door lock which they messed up and now I am going to have to pay to have that repaired. The windshield was $250.00 and since then I have had my insurance upgraded. Most recently was held up at gunpoint at my job. Hope they catch the no good for nothing. I am hoping to move away from this place soon.

Sounds simular to this story which happened in Amherst NY. Amherst has been ranked many years as one the safest places to live in America.

Goes to show you that you never know what can happen.

I feel like the stories people have involving any situation that could possibly happen to anyone else should be shared.

I have motorcycle stories that have taught me lessons to be a safer rider. Why would I not share them with others so they can be safer as well?

I'm glad no one was shot and that all ended as well as possible. MR was, I believe, making the right choices as much as could be. Good job MR.

You forgot one important step ..... you should have checked with JIM (next door) that he actually knew them.

If someone is in the house, I'm not waiting to be sure who they are before calling 911... but I do understand in the circumstance that you have a son that works late. However, what I did with both of mine was.... you call me when you are pulling up to the house and let me know you are about to come into the house.... then you let me know that is you when you DO come into the house. I don't care if they wake me up a minute doing it. It's better than then them having a gun pointed at them... or them getting mistakenly shot. I can then comfortably roll over and go back to sleep knowing they are there, and .... if I hear other noises later... knowing at that point, it's not them.

I would of had my wife call 911 before I ever left the bedroom, gun would of been in my hands and ready if needed.

Call me a paranoid chicken but, when I am in bed or leave the house it is locked and the Alarm is on. If a door is opened or a window moved the Alarm sounds. There are no warning signs and no Advertising that a Alarm is present. I don't live in a Palace, just a plain 60 year old house. It's just a basic Alarm but, it gives piece of mind.

Mosbyranger, I, and I'm sure a lot of others, applaud your cool and calm during the situation. We can banter about, unlocked doors, shoot to kill, call the police first, and on, and, on and on. But the bottom line is, 4 lives were saved, the police were not necessary, and did not endanger other lives by responding on an emergency basis un-necessarily, and you don't have a huge legal bill on your hands, not to mention the, mental anxiety associated with shooting someone. Congratulations sir, IMHO you are a poster boy for what home protection, CCW, gun rights etc is all about.
