I avoided a shooting this morning

The gun was not in my hand because it was not in my hand. I cannot give any other answer. It was 2 am, I had just been woken up and my thought processes may not have been functioning too well. The shorts I was wearing have large pockets so I could have gotten to it if needed. Yep. I surely did not do everything perfectly.
MR

So it wasn’t "perfect". You cannot plan what actions you will take during something like this. From what you have said you made more correct actions than wrong ones.

Now that you have had the time to think about everything, learn from what happened.

Get a good tac light pushing at least 200 lumens. That is enough to blind any person for a few seconds and give you the little extra time you may need.

I feel no more urge to criticize your actions than I do to scold the shooter in the other referenced thread for not shooting to kill a drunk college student.

I didn't realize that asking a question was criticizing. I thought maybe he had a good reason for not carrying the gun in his hand.

I don't get that either, I will grant that our front door has an automatic lock so you can't forget to lock it but even so in our house the habit it to lock every door as you go in or out regardless of what time it is.
When I was growing up in Chicago in the '60s, we had metal gates on front and rear doors and an iron prop rod set in the floor and the back of the front door to keep people out. It was the only way.

Not locking my door at night is about as alien to me as cannibalism.

I apologize Navy. My reply was in general, but the one of Mosbyranger's that I quoted was in reply to you I guess. I did not mean to single anything out that you said or asked, just trying to support MR since it seemed he was taking a bit of criticism, whether from you or not. Really, that's all.

Thankfully no one was injured or killed (especially you and yours). Lessons learned without incident.

When are these stupid kids going to learn.:hang2:

I'll chime in again. So far I haven't felt like any question was out of line or inappropriate. I've spent a good deal of time today wondering why I did not have the gun in hand. No answer has come forth, so it is what it is. A flashlight is a good idea, however, I did not point out in any of my previous posts that the porch light was on as was a light in the living room. I leave them on because my son comes home from work late. Nonetheless, the flashlight idea holds water and will be acted on. I'm thinking a 3 call mag light may soon find a home beside the bed. I do have a small AA mag lite, but an upgrade is in order.

Yes, a couple living in the Peoples Republic of Boulder shot a drunken college student who was in their home. After she had refused to leave. These people are Psychologists and had been stalked previously by one of their ex patients. At least that is the story I read. I'm glad I had a different outcome. Now, to absorb the lessons and hopefully have a better plan of action for the next encounter which I hope never happens.

I would venture to guess at several reasons for not carrying the gun in hand. First is conditioned response. 99% of the time when you pick up the gun it is to carry it in a holster or in your pocket. That is just the conditioned response.

Second, it's hard for us to believe that something bad is happening, when something bad happens. We all have some of the "it can't happen to me" syndrome. Sure, we take the simple precautions against bad things happening - wearing our seat belts, having a fire extinguisher, but do we actually prepare for the worst. Defensive driving is a good example. Most drivers' reaction to a bad situation is to simply hit the brakes. Most drivers are never trained to evaluate the developing in a split second. Example, my wife driving in a blizzard coming down a mountain pass on a two lane highway. I am awake as a passenger, she is concentrating on staying on the road, I am concentrating on evaluating everything else happening. Oncoming car attempting to go up the hill starts to fishtail. About 20 yards in front of us he goes into a full blown spin. Wife's reaction is to hit the brakes. I say, "No! Don't slow down, keep going!" She does and the car slides into our lane, BEHIND our vehicle, missing us completely, but by only inches. If we had slowed down he would have plowed right into us.

You heard strange voice in your house and your first thought was, "it must be friends of my son", a conditioned thought that whatever strange is happening can't be bad, and your response was a conditioned reaction to your conditioned thoughts.

I am curious as to why you did not keep the gun in your hand? It takes less than one second for someone with a gun in hand to aim and fire. If you had met an actual armed criminal, with gun in their hand, you would have been at a disadvantage having the gun in your pocket. I don't see a disadvantage to keeping the gun in hand in this case.

Was gonna ask the same question CMDR. At that time in the morning I would of had weapon out and back up called via 911.

Sorry Mosbyranger but the story sounds a bit too touchy-feely for my liking. Might be wrong but it just sounds off. You have unknown individuals in your house at O dark thirty in the morning and you tuck your weapon next to your gun? Something smells funny.

Glad it was defused without gun fire. But under the same circumstances, I would've held them at gunpoint until cops arrived...face down on the floor. I would've made sure the cops knew I was armed via 911 but the cops in my town are good...wouldn't have a problem with me holding these knuckle nuts at gunpoint. But lock your door dude.

Here is a really good tac light. This will soon replace the one I currently keep on my night stand which is a 220 lumens for my SKS.
Like I said in my other post you made more correct actions then wrong.

If this story is true, there may still be legal issues.

Why would you be talking about this on a public forum.

Something isn't right here.

You did good by not shooting innocent, non-threating people! Remember, what was the

:nono::nono:
immediate threat to your life, or great bodily injury?
have, legally, shot 4 people. Like most of us, I was sound asleep. My wife wakes me up and says that someone just came in the house. I didn't think too much of it as my son was due in at or about that time from his job at Walmart. Then I hear a couple of female voices saying "nice doggie", and talking between themselves. Now I'm totally awake. I told my wife to grab the phone and get ready to dial 911. I had it in my mind that this could have been my son with some friends. Or not because I did not hear his voice. I grab my SP101, throw on a pair of shorts, tuck the gun into the front pocket, and head downstairs. I got to the landing and see, standing around, 2 college aged guys and 2 girls. All were carrying beers. I asked them just what they were doing. They asked if this was Jim's house (Jim is a college student living next door). No, this is not Jim's house. 4 people immediately started apologizing and headed out the front door in what could only be described as a shambling hurry. Whew, situation defused. Firearm not brandished. Adreneline level skyrocketed, but managed. 4 drunk college students live to see another day. Police, paramedics, ambulances not dispatched. A positive outcome. I still shudder to the core when thinking about the possible consequences of this mornings situation. I am glad that I had a firearm, but gladder still that I was not forced to use it. This was a real dicey situation, it had the potential to go either way, but it ended up well. I hope I do not have to go through anything like this again. OTOH, it also goes to show just how suddenly a normal situation can take a sudden turn towards the worse when you least expect it.

:confused::unsure:
What??
Why would you question the truthfulness of the post?
What legal issues??
Why not share something like this?? I believe we can all learn from others experience.

Because this forum is packed with fishy sounding stories like this!

In real life, anyone involved in these situations would be wise to consult an attorney, keep quite, and not brag about it in public.

The language presented sounds sensationalized and like an old war story.

It almost sounds like a recent news story.

I live in the boonies and have doors locked and alarm system set....

I would have held them until officers arrived and let them clear them. Lot of social engineering involving more than computers these days...

What better cover to know who your neighbors are in the event they were busted.

I realized after I posted this last night how ignorant I am when it comes to 'forums'. Is this where the 'trolls' come in??

Forgive this NOOB. I've already given myself 15 lashes with a wet noodle.

However, if the story is true, there is no reason for an attorney because nothing came of it.

I haven't read any more about the Colorado shooting, other than the initial report. I'm guessing this story is VERY close to that one. I'd be interested if anyone has investigated this any further.

However, MR has been a member since 2008 and has posted since 2010.

I tend to trust people until given a reason not to be trusted. Maybe it should be the other way around, but it is what it is.

Question: Why was the SP101 your go to gun when you have a Kimber Ultra Crimson Carry 2 at your disposal?
