I am considering becoming a CCW Instructor (Missouri/Kansas)

I have been a gun owner for many years and recently took a CCW Class. I had trouble finding some one who could do the training during the week. I am Semi Retired and think it would be great to be able to provide classes with some flexibility for people need them. My Question is what is the best way to go about becoming an instructor and about how long would it take as well as potential cost to do so.
Thanks in advance

Around here most classes are done on Saturdays, 8am to 8 pm. So, like you, I thought I would offer a two day split and even a four weeknight class. (already an established instructor) I am still trying to recoup my initial costs and everyone who calls wants the Saturday only class. Good Luck.

You'll need to at least have the NRA Pistol Instructor certification which will cost you about $275.00 for the class plus your certification with the NRA. You'll then need to write your lesson plan and submit it and your credentials to the Sheriff of each county you want to be approved to teach for. You'll also need a classroom and a range of course You'll also need materials to handout to your students and certificates, B24 targets, etc.

You might consider becoming a Utah Instructor. Yes, you have to go to Salt Lake City and take the course and then go back every 3 years to renew but I've found it well worth while and I live in Virginia.

The NRA Certification is the easiest route.

Obtain insurance. Most ranges will not allow you to instruct without it.

Have a THOROUGH understanding of Use of Force Statutes. Be able to accurately translate all statutes you teach from lawyer-ease to English.

Befriend your local Prosecuting Attorney and pick his/her brain frequently about your curriculum.

You will not get rich doing these classes. It is an excellent hobby (and helping save people's lives), if it approached in a professional manner.

CCW Instructor

Hi cbi,

I'm not sure if you have pursued this any further. I can personally recommend a NRA councilor in Independence MO that is very well respected, Bruce Luedeman. I took his class for NRA instructors. He is former law enforcement, long time instructor and a VERY good teacher. Bruce also has a private range that he will rent to other instructors. I'm not sure of the specifics but call him, he is a great guy.

As far as getting started, figure up the cost and then multiply by at least 2.5. You will need a range, firearms, targets, eye and ear protection for everyone, a copy machine (the copy fees for hand outs add up quickly), bulk ammunition, insurance, advertising funds-a must, business cards, email at least and eventually a webpage. Also, make it legit, if you make $1.00 it is a business and not a hobby.

As mentioned by SWMO Instructor, you WILL NOT get rich. You will most likely make a few bucks here and there, maybe partially support your own hobby.

Happy holidays!

Feel free to contact me if you need any advice, although I'm no expert, just a guy with a passion for my hobby that wants to help other people learn safely.

I second the above, Bruce is a great instructor.

For me, the biggest thing I underestimate was the cost needed going into it. It cost a lot more then I realized. Handouts are my biggest reoccurring expenses.

It's also difficult to manage the paperwork etc and teach the class at the same time so I got my wife certified.

By the time you buy packets and the other materials it's around $20.00 per student. You'll also have to purchase the lesson plan and whatever other NRA training aides you wish to use. I choose to write my own lesson plans and provide students materials I've collected or made.

CCW classes are more of a public service in my opinion and can be used to advertise for your classes, but my experience is that most CCWers never get anything beyond the required class.

What class are going to teach? I teach only the Utah CFP class. I stopped all NRA classes because the Utah class was SO profitable & because there is such an incredible demand for it. I'm traveling to 4 States and am booked a month to a month & a half in advance. Classes are range from 15-26 at $90 per person. I provide a really good course with a lot more than just the mandated 4 hours and I do fingerprinting after the class. I also provide, at no additional charge, a certificate of training so students can obtain permits from states like FL, PA, AZ and others. I used to do the NRA First Steps but gave up when I discovered how much demand there was for the non-resident Utah permit. I've wound up with police officers and FBI agents as well as firemen for students. Police because they don't want the hassle of re qualifying every year under 218.

Good luck.
