Lot's of cool things about that shot. One in particular is that it appears that the artist, (and yes, someone had to put that outline on the ground) adjusted for perspective. In other words, there was some tower from which they planned the photograph. The artist had to make the top of of Ms LIberty, (or Libertas) wider, so that the final picture would look properly proportioned. Otherwise, the distant upraised hand and torch would look too narrow. At least, I am guessing that is what they did. I guess it wouldn't be too hard, you could put the outline on the ground, and then climb up the tower / building and look at it, than adjust it until it looks right. Once done, you fill the outline with people. Pretty cool shot, thanks for sharing.

Excellent piece of perspective photography. Notice how the further away from the camera the men are, the more men in depth are needed to achieve the requisite height in the photograph. Notice how 2/3 of all the men in that photograph are in the torch flame alone. They also had the men wearing differently colored shirts in different parts of the "sculpture" to add depth to the image. I remember this, but I thought it was from WWII, not from training for WWI.
