How would you answer this....

"I still see no reason why any manufacturer would make assault weapons that aren't for the military or police. And why are there mags that hold hundreds of bullets...what possible purpose do they have? I'm asking not to be snarky but because I want to know how people who are not in favor of gun control can help a non-gun person understand."

I'd probaly start with "Why do auto makers make cars that can go 120 MPH when the legal speed limit on most US roads is between 45 - 70 MPH? There have been several hundred, if not several thousand children killed in car wrecks in 2012 alone, but noone is screaming for a ban on automobiles, or for auto manufacturers to reduce the horsepower of their motors to where they will not go over the speed limit barriers. I see no reason for any auto makers to make a car that can go up to 120 MPH on US roads, which are dangerous enough as it is."
(Of course, this is just my ignorant, Redneck, troll viewpoint! By the way, where is the Redneck smiley?Link Removed )

Manufacturers make these weapons and large capacity magazines so the citizens of a free nation have the ability to protect ourselves against an oppressive government. If this does not make sense to you, read a history book.

Inn addition to the above, I offer the following quote:

"A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government." -George Washington

Ask them why women have breast implants, or every-other ad you see on TV after 10 PM is for "Male Enhancement". Bigger is better. :)

Actually, I usually respond with; "Actually, it's none of your business WHY I have or want something...it's called freedom of choice. If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand."

I would answer it like this:
"I still see no reason why any manufacturer would make assault weapons that aren't for the military or police. And why are there mags that hold hundreds of bullets...what possible purpose do they have?
You sir or mam are simply repeating the talking points of the hysterical left. You have no idea of what you are talking about nor are you interested in a real answer.
You know nothing of the guns you think you are referring to and have even less knowledge of history and the Bill of Rights.
I see no reason to answer such a stupid question asked by a such a lemming that will neither listen to a factual answer or reason, as your mind has been made up for you by the media.
However:
If you really are interested in finding out why some Americans choose to shoot the civilian version of military weapons come with me to the range and after a short safety course and a introduction into the workings of firearms, I will allow you to shoot several versions of these look a like guns and perhaps you can get a grasp of the skill and knowledge required to safely and proficiently operate these marksmanship tools.

wow! excellent. Might have to use that as the regular quote at the bottom of my posts.:yu:
I would add that after the real agenda of gun control takes affect my sling shot just won't cut it!

And to this, I might also add: The powers of the sword are in the hands of the yeomanry of America from sixteen to sixty. The militia of these free commonwealths, entitled and accustomed to their arms, when compared with any possible army, must be tremendous and irresistible. Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man against his own bosom?
Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birth-right of an American... [T]he unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state governments, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people. - Tench Coxe, Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788.

I like goloxc response. Yesterday the topic came up at work...this is how I handled it.

Are you a history buff? No....

Are you are firearms expert? No....

Then why are you taking about a topic you know nothing about? Why are you asking questions you don't care for the answers? You obviously have no passion for these topics, which is fine. Whatever you choose to have a passion for in life, how about you just stick to that topic?

I mean, I don't care for spaceships, so you don't see me at NASA telling them what should be done.

Common sense to me, is knowing what your talking about so you don't sound naive...or stupid.

I own what the question erroneously refers to as "assault weapons" because the National Firearms Act of 1934 has quite effectively, and quite unconstitutionally, repressed my God-given right to own a real assault weapon.

I resent that my parents' and grandparents' generations weren't more protective of the real reasons our Founding Fathers included the 2nd Amendment in our Constitution, and that they didn't pass down through relentless, repetitive, and consistently reinforced instruction, the traditions of individual liberty the 2A was intended to protect for perpetuity. I fear strongly that our current living generations are getting ready to pay dearly for their oversights in that regard, as many Americans, even on gun sites such as this one, are woefully ignorant about what the 2nd Amendment really means. Hint: It wasn't intended to protect your right to hunt for food, or to engage in sporting events or competitions. It wasn't intended to give the government the authority to force you to ask for its permission to buy, own, carry or use a weapon in defense of self, others or community/country. In fact, it was expressly written to prohibit government from controlling your God-given right to protect yourself from the government, and as such, the very notion that government should be able to control your access to weapons is in and of itself the undeniable proof that you will one day need them for the purposes the 2nd Amendment was written to protect your right to employ them for.

That said, and as heartfelt and honest as it is, the following is the best answer I've seen in this thread yet:

Thanks for that GB-Boater. I hadn't seen that one before. Great link.

Everyone who claims to support the 2nd Amendment should not only watch/listen to every second of that video, they should incorporate its message(s) into their own understanding and expressions of why they support the 2nd Amendment from here on out, and why they will fight to oppose any moves to weaken its force of law upon the law-makers of this country. And if you're not willing to fight to oppose such tyranny, then you don't really support the 2nd Amendment. The truth may be uncomfortable for some to accept, but that is the bottom line fact of the matter. Any other position will eventually lead to total disarmament of the American People, and our Founders knew it.

I agree with you, Blues! I watched that video, then I copied the link from GB's post, and sent it to everyone in my address book as a history lesson for America.
I've heard of things being touted as "required reading"... well, this video should be "required viewing" for everyone over 10 years old in the USA.

I was about to say about the same thing but was thinking sport bikes. Problem is The liberals use cars and we all know they are the party of do as I say not as I do.

I let people know that the word assault weapon can mean anything!!! As for large capacity magazines, it considers because Im always told we don't need for hunting; I let them know that I use a lot of my guns for recreation!!! I do use the fast cars & big tv's!!!

"And why are there mags that hold hundreds of bullets..."

I'd probably begin my response with laughing until I wet myself. Then I'd ask them to take me to the store where they saw that magazine, because I'm going to buy several of them in various calibers.

I like high capacity magazines because I'm lazy. I like to load up the mags the night before I go out shooting (at paper/clay targets), so I can relax and just concentrate on shooting. Even after 21 years in the Army I have never pointed a loaded weapon at an air breathing creature. I OC a locked and loaded pistol every day for the same reason I use a seat-belt, and have a fire extinguisher in my kitchen - just in case. My self, and the majority of gun owners have no desire to hurt another human being. However we refuse to be un-armed and allow some psycho harm one of our loved ones. Just look a the crime stats for Australia since they took away their weapons.

They say "AR" type weapons aren't for hunting, but actually they are very good varmit guns. Depending on the caliber they are excellent hunting rifles. I'm not currently a hunter, but I think my AK would be a pretty good deer rifle.

What do you call an armed populous? ...."Citizens"... with god given rights and the ability to defend them.

What do you call an unarmed populous? ...."Subjects"....with ONLY the rights that the benevolent government (dictators) grant them, without ANY ability to defend even the most limited 'rights' they have granted.

The Second Amendment protects all of the rest. This protection will require more than kind words and a slingshot.

It is every Americans duty to defend the ideals that have made America great.

Some really good replies preceding this one but this will do. I can actually agree with a comment about the need for assault firearms and large mags, if it was not that I am of the opinion that the supposed ban and legislation that they talk about in DC is, if you do not trust this slowly becoming socialist/fascist moslem leaning government, a foot in the door for further bans until all firearms are banned. I simply do not trust anything about this government. When we have no firearms the government is in total control and that is what they want. Cannot happen? Read your history books--we are on the cusp of demise of what was once the USA and is now becoming an asylum run by its inmates and Chicago gangst minions who have no use for the Constitution---which, by the way, includes 2A.
