How to help someone with recoil problems?

I have a friend who is afraid of recoil. Even my Bersa Thunder .380 bothers him. He anticipates the recoil and makes bad shots.
What is the best way to get him to shoot without worrying about recoil? If he doesn't learn to deal with recoil he has no choice but to only shoot .22lr

I consistently recommend the Chiappa Rhino for those who don't like recoil (I love my Rhino!!). Pricey, but the fires-from-the-bottom-cylinder makes a surprising difference. Beyond that... I suppose just get a much bigger gun that absorbs more recoil.

The Bersa Thunder .380 has a blowback design so it has a greater "felt" recoil than a traditional locked breach design. No need to go with a smaller caliber as most of those pistols are also lighter.

Try a full size all steel framed pistol in .380 or 9mm.

You've said it right here and you've said it in other posts. Start your friend off with something that doesn't have recoil, like the .22LR. Once he has technique down correctly and is confident in what to do, make sure that the grip used is appropriate. If so, bump your friend up in caliber. Once a new shooter realizes they can shoot without recoil, getting them to shoot with recoil should not be a problem.

Remember the rule... squeeze with a 1/4 lb pressure.... 1/4 lb, 1/4 lb, 1/4 lb, 1/4 lb, 1/4 lb, 1/4 lb, 1/4 lb, 1/4 lb, 1/4 lb, 1/4 lb, 1/4 lb, 1/4 lb, 1/4 lb, 1/4 lb, 1/4 lb... bang! The whole time keeping sight alignment and grip.

All of the previous posts were good, but here's my 2¢: If 22lr is all he's comfortable shooting - then he should shoot a 22lr. Even that is better than not having a gun by far. Plus, well-placed shots will stop a badguy - period. Plus, it's cheap to practice with to become the guy who can make well-placed shots.

I agree gundaddypv I suggested he get a .22 mag, maybe a Ruger LCR .22 mag and use it. The Magnum gives him a little better hitting power and still hardly any recoil. But If he goes with a .22lr that is fine also. What ever gun allows him to hit his target will work well.

Don't know if he would want it but a 1911 style in 22LR would have near 0 recoil, weather it be that or whatever just remember the heavyer the gun in any caliber the lighter the recoil will be, even the 1911 in 9mm is real light, and if he wants something with a little lest cost and near no maintainance the Glock 17C would be a good choice very little recoil but stilla strong rd
