How to apply for Illinois Carry Concealed License, step by step tutorial

So for the non res do you have to go there for one of the appointment or can you do this all online and email?

As of right now the application is totally 100% online. You still have to train with a state certified instructor, though the instructor can travel to your state. I'll travel for large enough groups.

The non res process is basically the same. When clicking on the checklist prior to applying link it has requirements for residents and non residents. If you look at the screen shots you will see several drop down boxes where you select your state of residence etc...

I am a NRA instructor and Oklahoma SDA instructor. Would that due for training requirements.

With your NRA Instructor credential, I assume you can write your self and NRA Basic Pistol or NRA PPITH/PPOTH certificate. That certificate would count towards 8 hours of training. You would still need to take an additional 8 hours of training to discuss carry concealed laws and the live fire qualification.

Got one for non res?

Ok spoke with some non res who have applied... If you are an out of state person applying then you must first fill out a paper form, have it notarized, then mail that in to the IL Dept of Central Management Services. They will assign you credentials that you can then use to create your login for the digital ID.

Also verified that as of no later than July paper applications will be available.

I have a cert. form AZ and Maryland so do any of those count?

I am going to call after the start of the new year and try to get some answers for non residents. As with anything new there will be somethings not thought of on their end.

Hi as of right now the Az nor Maryland couont toward any training exemption. You'd still need the full 16 hours of training. This excluds the "vehicle exemption for non residents" assuming you either reside in Maryland or AZ.

As of right now the only things that count for training exemptions are are follows:

llinois Hunter Safety Course 4 hours
Utah Concealed Carry 4 hours
Florida Concealed Carry 4 hours
Nevada Concealed Carry 4 hours
Missouri Concealed Carry 4 hours
Kentucky Concealed Carry 4 hours
Michigan Concealed Carry 4 hours
Chicago Firearms Safety Course 4 hours
NRA Basic Pistol 8 hours
NRA Personal Protection in the Home 8 hours
NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home 8 hours
Active, Retired, or Honorably Discharged member of the United States Armed Forces 8 hours
Prior Law Enforcement/Corrections Officer Firearms Training as detailed in 430 ILCS 66/75(J) 8 hours

Have they determined which states whose residents they will accept non-resident applications from?
I have not seen any determination just yet. It is safe to say that we will find out in the coming few months as people begin applying. If I do come across further information I will post it. Having said that, "substantially similar" has recently been defined, but they haven't stated which states are substantially similar.

Oh okay thanks I know that they give the ones for the Utah carry here at the Sportsman Club Store sometime.

I figure on applying to be an instructor and obtaining a permit via that route, but I wish they'd hurry up and put up a list of approved states. Plus I last heard that they expected instructors to obtain permits by April so my time as an instructor could be short-lived if I don't wait for that list.

Chicagogunsmith- I want to say that I'm new to this forum and have just completed my IL CCW training. Thank you for posting this type of information. There are few places to get up to date facts. I'll be checking your website for additional classes.

Hey Red, I do my best to stay up to day on the topic. I have been following the subject DAILY for the last 2-3 years. Carry Conceal in Illinois, and Illinois Gun Rights in general, really became my passion some where along the way. In addition to my blog previously linked you can also follow my facebook pages which have a little more random factoids than you'd find on my blog.

PS. I will be doing defensive pistol classes coming up probably in February or March. Let's face it CC classes aren't necessary "training" per say. These training classes will consist of holster deployment on a live range. Alternative shooting positions. Shooting on the move. Stress inoculation.

Where has IL defined "substantially similar"? What definition is being applied?

Thank you,
kwc
