How not to pack your third grader's backpack for school

This is the kind of gun owner who gives others a bad name.

Who carries their gun in their armpit around the house? How did it get from her armpit to inside the backpack?

Worse, yet, what mother leaves a handgun casually lying about the house with children present?

A Newington Elementary third-grader brought a gun to school Monday after his mother accidentally placed the firearm in his backpack, police said.

The boy approached a teacher at the beginning of the day and showed her his backpack containing the 9 mm Smith & Wesson, which did not have ammunition in the chamber. However, the magazine was loaded, police said.

In a media release, Summerville Police Lt. Nick Santanna said the gun ended up in the boy's bag because "it was mistakenly placed in there by his mother while she was carrying multiple items around the residence." He commended the boy for notifying the proper authorities.

The juvenile has not been charged, and charges will not be sought against the mother because police believe there was no criminal intent, Santanna said. The student has been suspended pending a disciplinary hearing, as is policy with an infraction of this nature, the school district said.

The boy's mother told police she was carrying her handgun, along with a jacket and a water bottle inside her home Sunday night and had the pistol under her armpit, according to an incident report.

Both the mother's and boy's names were redacted from the report.

The boy was playing on the floor and his mother told him it was time to study his vocabulary words, according to the report. The backpack was on the floor.

"She placed the water bottle on the dresser, the pistol was still under her arm, and (she) somehow accidentally placed the pistol inside the book bag," the report said.

After her son was done studying, she put the vocabulary sheet into the backpack, the report said. The next morning, she zipped the bag up but did not see the pistol inside.

Dorchester County District 2 spokeswoman Pat Raynor said the teacher notified the school resource officer, a counselor and administrators who responded and retrieved the gun. No one was harmed.

He found the gun and immediately notified a teacher. They are satisfied that there was no criminal intent. What the Hell did they have to suspend the student for? It don't make sense to me, although it might to a liberal. To me it makes absolutely no sense.

Schools aren't about making sense they are there to teach the next generation to live under a totalitarian regime. 😊

Suspending the student is wrong. It sends a message to the kids that doing the right thing gets you punished.

Everything these days in the government schools is about "zero tolerance" instead of giving the local administration some leeway in judgment of circumstances.

The message isn't doing the right thing will get you punished the message is right and wrong don't matter. .. who has the power is all that matters. .. same as any totalitarian unit.
