One thing I think people fail to take into a count is the amount of ammunition they carry with them. Most people who stock up on "tactical" gear for the end of the world/zombie land. Post videos/photos of their gear and talk about how they want to keep the weight down. etc.. So they only carry two-three extra mags on their vest when training or patrolling.
While I do agree weight can be a issue, even more so if you don't train with the weight you will be humping around. But unlike our military and SF forces(who a lot model their kits after.) Most of us will not be rolling around in armored trucks and will not have the air force to call for a resupply drop. Most of our forces stock their gear on the Humvee's, and choose to only carry a smell amount of ammo, knowing they have more mags in the truck.
They choose to carry max ammunition when patrolling on foot in enemy held areas. Depending on your branch and unit max combat mag load out will differ.
12 fully loaded M4-AR mags is around 14 pounds.
The last thing you want is to not have enough ammunition when the zombies are coming at you, or not have enough ammunition to break contact when an armed mob is charging you.
I carry 12 primary mags and two-three pistol mags and have RSP's(Resupply Points) around the area I'll be in and a bigger stock pile at base camp.
Again most of us aren't going to have a AMG(Automatic Machine Gun) to lay down a wall of suppressing fire while they retreat from the area.
