How heavy is your CCW gun?

I was wondering what weight guns people are concealed carrying. I know some carry the 11-13 ounce guns, but was wondering about 20-40 ounce guns. I am looking at a 22-30 ounce gun in the options I'm considering.

My S&W E Series 1911 comes in a 39.8 ounces. Carries great.

That is one of the guns I am thinking about along with a .357 Ruger SP101. I was thinking about the SW1911sc, but am thinking the stainless steel SW1911 is more durable.

How do you measure weight? Empty? Loaded with full mag + 1 in the chamber? My XDM-45 4.5" with 13+1 weighs 42 oz (on a digital postal scale.) "Official" weight says 31oz with an empty mag. My Colt XSE official weight is 36oz. The XDM loaded weighs 5 oz less than the Colt XSE with 8+1 on the same digital scale.

Loaded, mine is about 34 oz. Glock G22 full size, 15+1 .40 cal. I carry two mags as well that register in at about 24 oz. So all toll, on my belt, I have about 58 oz hanging off of me.

I was carrying a Glock 27 until I bought the Smith and I haven't been sorry. It actually carries a lot more comfortable than the Glock did. I have nothing against Glock but since the Smith is thinner across the top it's a lot more comfortable to carry in my opinion. I regularly carry it in a Panther Concealment IWB holster all day with just a tshirt for cover with no problems.

Thanks! I will look into that holster too.

Yes! I am thinking about a SW1911sc and the all stainless variant with a 4.25" barrel. I am also considering a supertuck deluxe holster for it too.

Why did I bring this topic up? I read that CCW beginners make the mistake of getting a regular sized gun and then end up moving to a lighter gun. I am seeing this is incorrect as long as one has a good gun belt and holster. I do think I will end up at 29 oz or 40 oz empty with a SW1911sc or SW1911 in all stainless. I am also looking at a Ruger SP101 .357 in stainless.

At work, I carry about 40 oz around my waste that is about 6" in diameter (escape air pack). Can't carry a gun into the plant anyway, but out of the plant, a similar weight close to the body would be better.

I am a firearms instructor and I discuss this with my students. 'the weight and type of carry handgun is an individual choice. size, weight and style are all components as well as the type of holster. I carry the Rock Island 1911A1 CS, Springfield Armory XDS 45 and Kel-Tec PF-9 as well as S&W 638 and Ruger SP101 revolvers. My carry holsters also vary depending on what I'm wearing and where I'm going. I hope this helps a little. Happy Thanksgiving.

Have two carry weapons. Started with the Springfield XDm 9C and then added an S&W M&P Shield 9mm.

The XDm weighs 33.2 oz. with the 13rd magazine and one in the chamber while the Shield weighs 24.9 oz with the 8rd mag and one in the chamber. The 7rd mag reduces the weight be about 0.7 oz.

Both are carried in CrossBreed type IWB holsters and I can conceal either one without a problem. The 18 rd mag in the XDm is a bit more of a challenge to conceal, however.

The additional 8.3 oz of the XDm is definitely noticeable and for that reason I prefer the Shield for carry, but for now I shoot much better with the XDm. Need more time on the range with the Shield to really get a handle on it.

When carrying the XDm, I have to take in one more notch on the belt to keep things up where they are supposed to be - the bulging eyes might be a bit of a giveaway that I am carrying! [I find that using Perry suspenders with the XDm, when that is possible, greatly helps with the comfort level.]

Of course there is a significant difference in the number of rounds that you have to work with but I figure that if I need more than 8 bullets I am probably toast anyway.

For what it's worth . . .
