I'm just curious why no one has brought up why and how this kid had access to these firearms that were in his house? I carry daily and own multiple guns including an AR. I wonder why everyone seems to be overlooking the fact that these guns should have been safely secured by the owner in a safe or trigger locks etc... Firearms locked up! Ammo locked up separately! im curious why i haven't heard this mentioned not even once on tv or in any blogs.

Good point that I also wondered about... But even if they were locked up, like most of us, 1 was ready for use for home protection. That's probably the one he shot his mom with then unlocked the rest, loaded them and left. I also had seen on the news that him and his Mom went shooting together,so he knew how to use them.

He murdered his mom. Maybe with hers, maybe with an illegally purchased gun from Ray Ray's trunk. After he murdered her, he stole the rest.

The MSM reports whatever the hell they want. They fudged up all the facts to make it more appealing for Obama. Find a reliable source.

who says that guns need to be locked up in my home? and my ammo resides on a shelf in my garage. there are no children in my household and it really is nobody's business how my weapons are stowed.

I agree. Everyone in my house is proficient in the use of firearms, including my 16 year old daughter who is no more disturbed than 90% of other 16 year old girls, so none of our guns are locked up. In Washington, after the two separate instances of kids being left alone in vehicles with firearms available who then shot themself and a sibling (one was a cop who left the gun in a van alone with his two kids) there were bills introduced to enact "safe storage" laws. The democrat who introduced the bill proposed the mandated safe storage under lock and key in the home of firearms (exactly how that is related to the shootings in vehicles, I have no idea), but she also had a provision for the sheriff to be able to enter homes for the specific reason of checking the storage of firearms with no warrant required. The bill never made it to the floor.

I'm not saying there should be any laws about locking guns up or ammo in anyone's home. Im just saying I personally take full responsibility in my home that no unauthorized users have access to my firearms. I'm just curious if this kids mother took any measures to do the same.

Actually you DID say they should have been locked up. That can only be dictated if there is a law...something I don't think we need. It is already illegal to break into my home to steal my guns!

Actually i said safely secured !!!! I was simply using the words safe, an trigger locks etc... just as some common examples

I would be surprised if the mom didn't know her own son had major psychological issues. I think the assumption is a special responsibility to take extra measures to ensure he never ever had access to her weapons without permission, like a hidden key or a secret safe code...but ho knows maybe she did all that and more but he still outsmarted her.

Not a one of my weapons is disabled or locked up in any way. My family knows how to use them safely. They do me no good in an emergency if there behind a key.

Myself, I don't secure my guns FROM my family, but FOR my family. If no one at all is home, there is the remote possiblility of a home invasion, even with my 4-legged security and the location of my property.

So I use a gun safe to make sure the weapons I am not currently carrying/using, are safe and secure to be used by my family in the future.

I keep my guns safe from unauthorized users. Fortunately for me, everyone in my house is authorized so I don't need locks or cases. It's possible Mrs. Lanza felt the same way. However, considering she wanted to have him put away, that would seem to have been a very bad decision on her part. My guess is she never dreamed he'd do something like that. When you think about it, how many parents really would think their kids capable of doing such a thing? The world has it's fair share of messed up kids, some of them very much so, but it would be rare indeed to find a parent who truly believed their child was capable of such a horrific act.

As understand the conflicting news reports, his mother was one of those wacko survivalist types who had guns everywhere.

The mother knew he had major problems. She had been trying to obtain conservatorship, so she could have him committed. The cost of care is amazing, and the so called safety net does not catch too much. So current mental health care policies deserve some of the blame here.

As far as being outsmarted, don't ever assume that because someone has Aspergers that they are stupid. The contrary is often the case. My wife had years of working professionally with kids like this and says that frequently, they are brilliant. And they can be extremely cunning when they want something. Since it has made the news that he was aware of his mothers plans, he was probably very angry at her, and since it has been reported that she volunteered at the school, he directed his anger into attacking something she cared about, the children in that school.

This may be what the cause of the attack was, but nothing, including mental illness or disability excuses the pure evil in Adam Lanza.

If you rely on news reports, you're one of those people too. Stop relying on news reports.

I guess I'll just have to rely on what I read in the forums. I mistakenly thought that my statement regarding "conflicting" reports indicated that I had made a judgement based on the only source of information I had.

I know. I'll just bury my head in the sand.

We most certainly know that the kid was able to access the firearms in the house. That being said we don't know how he accessed them. Those who believe the media are naive. If I murder someone I have all the time in the world to access whatever I want.

Sorry. I get tired of the sensationalist crap that comes from the media. Not your fault, and I shouldn't have worded it that way.

Unless I missed something.... Most if not all of you certainly did!!
I'll give the murdered Mother a consideration.
Until I hear otherwise I am going with my scenario. Hope the self righteous here can understand.
The kid grabbed his mother by the hair and dragged her over to the safe and put an ASSAULT knife or ASSAULT screwdriver to her throat and told her to open the safe or else!
The rest my friends is more speculation!!!
