How does one go about finding a good FFL?

Just curious about the whole FFL thing... Looking to get my first carry weapon.

Edited as to not offend anyone...

I think you may be a little confused as to what an FFL is.

FFL = Federal Firearms License. Businesses who hold an FFL are often referred to as FFLs as well (Federal Firearms Licensee).

Basically any business that transfers firearms, be it a manufacturer, gunsmith, wholesaler, retailer, etc...has to be an FFL.

And WTF are you talking about, regarding "the guys who accept payment in silver?"

If you're so concerned about going to a regular dealer it concerns me that maybe you shouldn't have a firearm. If they are a reputable dealer private or otherwise they are going to run the same background check.

I came across an ad for instruction services and in addition to the regular payment sources, they listed silver as a payment method... I thought it was just weird... Forget I asked a simple question, I guess I asked the wrong questions...

And blueribbonman, it's not that I don't want to do business with a reputable dealer. I just don't know where to start with ordering from online sources. Nevermind, I'll look elsewhere...

Go to your local sheriffs office to find procedures on how to obtain your carry permit if you need one. Go to a local gun shop and ask who all has an FFL in your town. You could also try to google FFL + (insert your town). That should get you started on purchasing a firearm online.

I still recommend you going into all your gun shops and handling each firearm, rent them at a range if possible, before purchasing any firearm online, at a store, or privately.

I do recommend buying them in the private market, because every firearm bought and moved into the private world is one more firearm that the government can't confiscate easily.

Sorry, that's the bad thing about reading is that you can't hear the voice influx. Now that I know a little more of what your looking for, I personally have ordered a pistol from J & G sales, a buddy ordered the same make & model at the same time & ended up sending it back & got another one. Anything you order on line as far as firearms need to be sent to someone that has an FFL, I would just go to a dealer & tell them that you have or are going to order a firearm so they know it's coming & a good dealer will charge about $20.00 for doing the paperwork.

Ask around. In my area, costs range from $15.00 (which I paid at a local pawn shop) to $25.00. The hardware store that quoted $25 also mentioned an extra $10.00 charge for "internet" orders due to more paper work with a private sale. other gun stores in town charge $20.00.
