How do you prepare you self against an armed robbery?

Being prepared is half the reason of someone surviving a robber that have a gun on you.
I have a friend that was a LEO, he and 3 of his friends was held up in a parking lot in San Francisco parking lot in China town by 2 arm men.
He had his off duty gun with him but he was not going to jeopardize his friends life by getting into a fire fight with 2 people that have guns pointed on him.
One thing you have to think about before it happens to you is are you willing to take another life and are you willing to accept the possibility of taking a bullet or even death. What is the value of what you are carrying compare to your life?
This LEO was the one that taught me to always carry two different wallets when going to area of high risk. One wallet that you can throw away with fake credit cards, ID's and dollar bills and the other real wallet you have on your person in a place that you normally will not carry a wallet like your front pocket.
He basically asked his friends to comply with their demands and he took his fake wallet out and threw it about 10 feet away from these robbers. The robbers was only interested in the wallets and not getting into a fight that they may lose.
Lesson learn here is that even when you have a gun, it does not mean you have to take a chance when you absolutely do not have to!
I carry a extra wallet for that reason and yes, I also carry my Glock 27 40 cal and an extra 15 rounds magazine.

I would caution that this is a good way to get yourself shot, even before that wallet hits the ground. IMO, the last thing you want to do to a nervous BG with a gun is startle him or her. When we read stuff on the internet we always have to try to remember it may not always be accurate information.

I'm glad it worked out ok and nobody was shot. But, I say your friend was lucky. (What he did could have just ticked the BG off.)

Carrying a "dummy" wallet is a good idea. But, you need to be very careful how you behave when a BG has caught you by surprise and has a gun pointed at you.

Instead of carrying two wallets, carry two guns. You can't depend on a bad guy just walking away.

Act like you are going for your wallet but instead pull out a gun in each hand. Toss the one in your non-dominate hand to your buddy and yell "take out the one on the left!" as you blast the two on the right.

Then blow the smoke off your barrel, pull your hat down close to your eyes and turn and walk away....

We each have our lifestyle--so be it. You want to avoid an armed robbery--do not be walking around at 2AM. Situational awareness works great and IS the answer to the question but when you disregard it for your personal needs and I apologize--but 2AM certainly qualifies--you are putting yourself out there for the picking--whether you are CC or an LEO or anyone. I do not know how many cases I read about where someone is at an ATM machine at 1 or 2AM. Are you nuts?

I agree in general W/ your point but I think the point of the OP is that no matter what you do you may end up on the wrong of a gun.

That said, if the bad guy has already shown that he's desperate enought to introduce deadly force into the situation I'm not going to trust my life to his good intentions. He's just bought himself a gun fight

A friend, not that many years back home from doing dirty deeds for Uncle Sam in the "brown water Navy" in central America, had just cashed a paycheck, when a guy approached to rob him. The guy didn't even manage to get his gun fully out of his waistband before my friend jumped on him, all 260 lbs. End of game. Call cops and have bandit hauled away. But this only happened because my friend was alert.

I suppose the fake wallet is a good idea. I've seen Ayoob write about wrapping bills around a matchbook, so you can toss it to the robber. I do subscribe to Col. Cooper's "social duty" concept; one has a duty to resist crime. But I'm not going to get my family killed if I can avoid it. The odds of my survival are a lot better if I'm alert and reaching for my gun before the robber makes his move.
