How did it feel when you first started carrying?

I just wanta kill...kill...KILL...KILL...

(No, wait, that's from an old Arlo Gurthrie song, I believe, just confused here.)

Kinda cool, the other day was talking to a local LEO who is a martial arts student of mine, and in discussing our response to BGs, he said he wasn't really worried since he carries a gun. Then he paused, looked at me, and I pulled my vest aside to reveal my piece. He just shook his head. Cop: 1, Citizen: 1. The way it should be.

I don't remember how it felt when I first started carrying, but I know how it feels now: right.

The responsibility stays, the fear goes away and the physical presence gets adjusted. I really does not take that long.

The hard part is not overplaying or overthinking things during that period. A good rule to think about over and over is KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF THE GUN, as it is instictive to "play" with it. Beyond that you just need not to draw attention to yourself while you are trying to figure out how to get everyone to stop looking at you (which they are not). Just act normal.

Like the song say: Don't worry about a thing, cause every little thing gonna be alright!

The first time I carried it was almost like paranoia, but not quite. It was hard to stop thinking "is everyone looking at me?" and start thinking about why I was there. I do still ask my wife if she can see it if I get a new holster or carry in a different place. Sometimes I've had to change things up because of where I am or where I'm going, but as someone else said, it now feels "right" to carry. I had a situation a few weeks ago when I caught the bumper of a truck with a trailer I was trying to maneuver through a tight parking lot. The husband and I were out looking for damage, bending down and looking under the truck etc., and it was a little hard not to think about uncovering with his wife watching us, but that was all. There was more damage to my ego from catching the bumper than anything else. I do like carrying a dark auto in a dark holster with dark pants, and believe it helped conceal in this situation.

Sitting there on the group W bench with all kinds of...

About a 1/2 a mile from the railroad tracks...

You can get any thing you want at... except Alice...

I can smell the turkey cooking...

Peace...

I remember being a little nervous, I think I was more worried about someone seeing it than an AD. Now I carry a M&P .45 FS with one in the tube and most of the time forget its there. You do become more observent and more likely to avoid trouble spots which is just a bennie if you ask me.

i would wonder if anyone could tell if i was carrying and if the gun was printing, now i don't even think about it,and i stay alert of my surroundings always

+1 M&P45... Nice carry piece...

I have been debating for some time whether to carry a 45 or 9 mm, and for several reasons decided to go with the 45 about a week ago. I got the gun broken in in time for a business trip that I am currently on for three days, and my wife and I leave a week from Saturday for a one week trip that will take us to Florida and then back to Ohio via Indiana where we are attending a second conference.

I have shot a gun many times, but I must confess that when I loaded the Kimber and got it ready to put in the holster and head off, it felt quite sobering. Thoughts of the thing going off accidentally came to my mind. I think part of it is that the gun is new to me. I went with a Kimber Ultra Carry 45, and the gun I have used for target practice over the past 20 years has been a SW 910.

I would be curious to know how others who now carry on a regular basis felt early on when they first started carrying. I wonder how long it will take to get comfortable with a gun strapped to my belt.

Thanks,

Neal

Just imagine NOT having it, and you'll feel JUST fine. Cowboys would say they felt naked without a "hog's leg" on theri hip, while Wyatt Earp was so used to carrying that he didn't even realize it.

at first I was like many on here and worried about if I was "exposed" that feeling quickly fell to the ground after a couple wolly world walks. No I really dont care if someone see my weapon do to the fact half the time I Open Carry. It has made me a MUCH more relaxed driver and person in general. When I see someone do something stupid I can just laugh at them and walk way. But in the end run I carry every where I legally can (when I am in the states) even if I am walking around the corner from the house. When I get up putting the pistol on is as much a routine as brushing my teeth or getting dressed. I no longer question "IF" I carry but what and how.

My first time was in the army and that was the .45 but that was exposed it was strange at first but pretty soon it was more of pain then anything I did a lot of payroll guarding and moving awol soldiers things like that.
first time as a civilian I did almost every thing all the others posted I kept grabbing it to make sure it did not fall out
I thought every time I went into my pockets it would fall out or everyone would see it, and it pulled my pants downs more then one time. for me it has been just under a year now and I'm kind of used to it but I still grab it once in a while to make it is there.:to_pick_ones_nose:

most comments have pretty much summed up my feelings...concern about printing, can people tell, why is that person looking at my waist...the idea that carrying is "right" has always been with me, my concern had always been making sure noone else knows...oh yeah, and constantly pulling on the bottom of my shirt :)

It's so funny; I started a thread like this about a year ago when I started carrying. I felt like the whole world knew and that at any moment someone would yell "He's got a gun!"

Now, it's second nature. If anything, the enormity of the responsibility is greater than ever; but the "fear" is gone. Not sure when the moment of relaxing happened.

Good luck and take care.

Ditto on most of above - except I never experienced the "clanking" feeling. You do feel as if its very obvious that you are carrying, when in fact, few except other "packers" would ever notice. Do start out with a smaller. lighter gun and feel comfortable with it first before "upgrading" to a cannon. As you carry more. you will start to feel "naked" without it. I also felt my awareness of what was going on around me really intensify - it does carry a great responsiblity with it. More are carrying now than you know - see if you think you can spot them, obviously without asking.

I felt paranoid. I had this weapon with me out in public. What if all of a sudden I were go mad.

However " I got better"

I felt like everyone was eyeballing me, and my pants kept sliding down. I actually felt more aware of my surroundings and those people within those surroundings. I thought it was just me, but from everyones comments are suppose I'm not alone...
