How Can You Own A Gun And Be This Ignorant Of The Law?

Given the fact that firearm laws are more convoluted then most laws are it is easy to see this occurring. I have been told at ranges by people all time that mg's and suppressors are illegal to own many also tell me I should put them out of site before I get into trouble. I have heard all kids of stupid stuff from people at gun shops many times form employees. I would hazard that less then 10 percent of any states population has a true understanding of there states laws covering firearms.
Depending on your state, MGs and suppressors may be illegal. In most states though, if you are good with the BATFE, you are good with the state.

While I was at work one night I got into a conversation about guns W/ a co-worker. At some point in the conversation she stated to me that in Colorado it is illegal to posses a loaded firearm anywhere but at a gun range on the firing line. She stated this as fact w/ 100% conviction. She also informed me that in Colorado you must store your firearms, your ammunition and your magazine in three separate locations (I guess if “A” is true then “B” must follow) and that you may not transport a loaded hand gun in your car for any reason (Again, if “A” is true “C” must follow) whether you have a permit or not.

She held these beliefs even after I referenced CRS 18-12-204 for her and I decided this wasn’t the hill I wanted to die on. Mind you this woman purports to be a gun owner.

I’ve had other “gun owners” tell me that all firearms in the state of Colorado must be registered w/ the local police (specifically forbidden under Colorado law)

I’ve been told that you must fill out “special paperwork” in order to sell a firearm in the state. That you must have a CHP to transport a gun in a vehicle period, I had a CSPD desk sergeant tell me that this was a “gray area” he continued to state this even after I showed him this

So my question, very simply, is “How can people who purport to be gun owners be that bloody stupid?

Its definatly not just Colorado, its all over, and at times I cant help it, when I cross paths with a moron like that, and this applys to both sex's, I tell them, usualy after correcting me for something I'm doing or not doing right, well then you better go call the law, cause I'm doing what I want to do, and if it bothers you that bad you better call and report me, then we see how much trust they have in there own mind

Is It Me Or Are People Getting Dumber?

Another example of stupid gun owner tricks

Is It Me Or Are People Getting Dumber?
I’m getting ready to leave work tonight and 3 of my co-workers start talking about guns. I didn’t listen to the whole conversation but I heard one of them talking about all the cool gunz for sale at the PX on Ft. Carson. “They’re really cheap and all need is someone in the Army to buy them for you… “

At this point I turn around and tell them that they are talking about a straw purchase and they could go to jail for a really long time for it.

Their response? “Oh you don’t know”

Then they start talking about different ranges in town some one mentions Rampart Range and they proceed to talk about how it got closed because some Mexicans got in a gang fight up there….

I join their conversation again to mention that Rampart Range was closed because some one got shot when their muzzle loader malfunctioned and it’s been proven that unsafe firing practice had nothing to do w/ the incident

Their response? “Oh you don’t know”

The conversation moves on to this wonderful huge new range that will be built on Ft. Carson. It will be open to the public and it’ll be big enough to shoot a Barret on "the General said so" ... ( I so wanted to ask " Are we talking about the ADCM? The Post Commander? the Meddac Commander? which General said? but I didn't)

By this time you’d think I’d had enough sense to just shut up, finish my paper work and leave but noooooo. Glutton for punishment that I am I decide to take one last shot at it and I mention that I’d be hesitant to fire on an on post range because you’re required to register your guns w/ the Post Provost Marshall before you’re allowed to bring them on post . You know what happened next right?

To be fair I’m 46 and I think the oldest of them was like 24 maybe. So, I’m sure they thought I was just some old fart that didn’t know but I’ve met rocks w/ higher IQ’s than theirs collectively.

She's no more (and possibly less) ignorant than the average cop.

Ohio requires training for a CHL, which is basically the NRA Basic Pistol course. That's 100% backwards.

The firearms knowledge portion should be eliminated or cut way back and replaced with federal and state firearms law and state self-defense law.

I've NEVER seen anybody here in Ohio get in trouble because they didn't know their gun. You CONSTANTLY see people who get in trouble because they don't know the law (as well as the common forms of LEO ignorance of it).
