Houston cop kills double amputee in wheelchair

A pen waving double amputee was such a threat he had to be shot. C'mon you mean to tell me a trained cop got cornered by an angry wheelchair bound man waving a pen and was so petrified for his life he had no other choice than to shoot the guy? This is not justifiable in my book. He's a complete coward and should be removed from the force, imprisoned and sued.

This was the officer's second shooting in only 5 years on the force. Officers like him are why so many people hate the police.

One would think that this crazed two-limbed wackjob could have been avoided rather than shot to death.

The facts folks just the facts. Do we know what really went down? But the Cop should be confined to a wheelchair too.

True but the first one may have been justified. Why is it that more cops today are trigger happy psychos and last century a cop could go his entire career w/o so much as a single shot fired unless it was target practice and requal. Has our society become more violent in 50 years or are cops just more bully like today. Just think what tomorrow may bring with all the Ritalin dropping, psychosis induced video gamer kids wanting to join the police force just to play shoot 'em up for real.

This reminds me of the 6' 3" 250 lb cop that tasered a 5' 90lb old lady at a traffic stop and to justify himself said he felt threatened by her. Where do these idiots get the idea to just shoot someone when they can't or don't want to deal with a situation.

Wasn't there and only have the side the newspaper is presenting so I won't judge. But...

The owner of the group home, John Garcia, told the Houston Chronicle that the man had a history of mental illness and had been living at the house about 18 months. Garcia said the man had told him that he lost a leg above the knee and all of one arm when he was hit by a train.
"He sometimes would go off a bit, but you just ignore it," Garcia told the newspaper.

Maybe instead of squaring off on the police who were responding to, presumably, the care takers request for help, maybe the focus of attention should be on the group home that would ignore outbursts from a man that has/had a history of mental illness.

If the group home and the organization that it is affiliated with had been looking out for the best interest of the patients/patrons, instead of looking for the money it was taking in from the current medical system, maybe this call for the police never would have been made and we'd be talking about something else completely.

The end result here is not justified, given the scant amount of information we have from the article, but the circumstances leading up to the event need to be considered.

So we all know he was wrong...but let's see how many on the Houston Police force defend this criminal.

I wouldnt call somebody a criminal based solely on a news article. It's not wise to jump to conclusions about things you have not experienced outside of reading about on the internet. Ever heard of media bias? Not to mention all the other inherent problems associated with story telling/media reporting.

If the investigation reveals wrong-doing, the man will have his day in court.

I don't think there's any question that society has become more violent. A couple of reasons that I see for it are that our legal system refuses to punish violent behavior, whether by the criminals or the enforcers, and people are getting more angry all the time because they feel increasingly helpless.

Okay, I did jump to conclusions based on a news article. But, I have had my fair share of mentally unstable patients, in and out of institutions/care homes. It's hard for me to understand how two men with police training had to resort to lethal force against someone so physically crippled. I'm not saying it's impossible, but very improbable.

If more facts come to light, and I am wrong I'll admit to it. I just don't see that happening in this instance.

Maybe, at least I'd like to THINK so.

But the truth is that depends ENTIRELY upon the individual department and what the organizational culture is RIGHT NOW.

In Chicago or New Orleans, I'd expect a pro-forma "investigation" and whitewash. I'd be shocked if that DIDN'T happen.

Google "Chicago, Reader, Killed on Camera" and see what CAN happen.

I don't know enough about the Houston PD to know if they'll do a real investigation or not.

I am sorry but I found this post on the subject that I have to repeat!

In related news, a combined FBI-BATF task force raided a militia compound 30 miles north of Salmon, Idaho, arresting 15 people and seizing a cache of writing implements. An FBI source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the weapons included assault Sharpies, sawed-off ballpoints, fully automatic fountain pens, and 20 gallons of high-purity ink.

Man that is just too funny. I wouldn't doubt that might possibly happen. After all govt gestapo raided Gibson guitar with guns drawn because of wood they supposedly had illegally. Gibson is suing last I heard but don't know what has become of it.

How could a man with one arm and one leg pose a threat to you with a pen. What was he hopping towards you at a rate that you couldn't retreat? No. He was in a damn wheelchair. How does a man with one arm simultaneously wield a "weapon" and advance towards you in a mobile chair powered by manually spinning the wheels with, in his case, his only arm. Jesus Christ, tasing this guy would have been excessive.

My uncle lost a leg to cancer. While in his wheel chair, he would use his good leg (AKA the one he had left) and "scoot/drag himself forward.
The two tiny wheels in the front of the chair were used for steering so he didn't need his arms for that.

Just have to wonder how many more of these morons are out there. At least one seems to make the news every few months.
