Ok I had originally posted this in the Tn State specific area of the forumn no views, so I would like to ask a few questions here. I have a Indiana LTCH lord willing we may be given the opportunity to move west of Nashville, some thing that I have worked long and hard for. I read that you have to take a state approved course to get a license to carry a hand gun there, I aplogize if it is called some thing else there?. I have done a little research I am trying to find out what a state approved course is? And can any of this be done ahead of time? I would think that my ltch would be good there as they accept IN ltch, so I think it would be ok to do so while we are in transition if the move takes place? Also does any one know if it is ok to shoot outsid of city limits with the proper back stop? Just wondering because in IN as long as you are not in city limits you can legally. Also this is really off topic I know but figured it could not hurt to ask. Does any know about the areas any where from 30-45 minutes west of Nashville?
Are there any nice small towns there ie grocery store small harware store gas station type town? Any recomendations?

Thank You

In October of 1996, the Department of Safety began issuing handgun carry permits pursuant to Public Chapter 905. Prior to this change, handgun carry permits were issued by local sheriff's offices.
TCA §39-17-1351 makes a facially valid handgun permit, firearms permit, weapons permit or license issued by another state valid in this state according to its terms and shall be treated as if it is a handgun permit issued by Tennessee. This does not authorize any firearm or weapon other than a handgun.
If a person with a handgun permit from another state decides to become a resident of Tennessee, the person must obtain a Tennessee handgun permit within six (6) months of establishing residency in Tennessee.
Tennessee does not accept certificates of training from any on-line or internet course as training requirement fulfillment.

There are many places who offer the classes and each and everyone charges there own prices some lower and some of them are much higher. You are required here in TN to pass a 8 hour course. There is a written test you must pass and there is a range course you must also pass. Most classes require at least 100 rounds of live fire on a range. The Dept of Safety requires a 50 on target.

You are not allowed to carry a Fire Arm in TN unless you have a permit on you at all times. In regards to outside of Nashville it would be in your best interest to find a local range there in Davidson County or the County you will be living in where you can become a member and shoot your guns at.

1.You find a place who offers the Safety Course and you sign up to take the course prices will vary depending on business.

2.You then take your paper work to any full service Dept of Safety office or station fee $115.00

3.You then half to find a place where they can fingerprint you most times there is no fee it has been included in the previous $115.00 you have already paid.

4.You then will wait around 90 days to receive the permit in the mail. Hope this helps. Good Luck

The Department of Safety and Homeland Security is mandated to require applicants to submit proof of the successful completion of a department approved handgun safety course. An applicant is not required to comply with the firing range and classroom requirements if within five (5) years from the date of handgun carry permit application the applicant successfully completed all handgun training of not less than four (4) hours as required by any branch of the military.
There have been many interpretations of this statute over the last several years. Letters have been submitted from commanding officers, DD-214 forms, military ID cards, Honorable Discharges and General Discharges as verification of training.
On March 4, 2011 this process was clarified with the standardized usage of the Department of Defense form (DD-2586) to document handgun training of not less than four (4) hours. At that time we were informed that all branches of service completed a standard verification of military experience and training on the DD-2586.
On December 8, 2012 the Department was informed of two forms used by the Army which capture combat pistol training (DA-88-R and DA5704-R). These forms can now be used to verify military handgun training.
The movement of the United States Coast Guard from the Department of Defense to the Department of Homeland Security altered this procedure. The Coast Guard utilizes a U.S. Department of Homeland Security, CG-3029 to capture handgun training.
The CG-3029, DD-2586, DA-88-R and DA-5704-R are the only documents acceptable for obtaining military exception to TCA 39-17-1351. Samples of all documents and instructions are available on this website.
