EVERETT, Wash. -- A suspected burglar was shot dead by a homeowner inside an Everett home Monday.

Snohomish County Sheriff's deputies said the burglar broke into the house on the 10500 block of 21st Avenue Southeast at 11:45 a.m., believing no one was home at the time. The suspect was confronted by the homeowner, who was armed, and after a confrontation, deputies said the suspect was shot and killed.

A number of recent burglaries in Snohomish and King counties have occurred during the daytime.

Deputies said it is possible the home where the incident occurred was targeted because there was no car in the driveway and a newspaper in the lawn, appearing to be empty.

This is not too far from where I live. There has been a high number of burglaries and car prowls in the un-incorporated areas of Snohomish County. I suspect that those numbers will diminish for awhile...until the next culling! :)

And they say you can't fix stupid

No word about whether or not the homeowner was injured at all. Hope not. "And another one bites the Dust". This is another example of being prepared.

You have to protect your home because you work to damn hard to get it. You pay your morgage, insurance taxes and then some numb nut going to break in and help himself to your hard earn goods!! Thats insane! You those signs that people put in their windows "BEWARE OF DOG"?? I'm tempted, I haven't done it but I'm tempted to have a sign made that says "DAMN THE DOG, BEWARE OF THE MAN WITH THE GUN"!!!

Used to have one of a revolver pointed that said just that. Had it on the patio door out back. Have a small one on the back door here that says--Thieves, please have ID so next of kin can be notified. We have been broken into several times and I am very tired of working/saving just to feed some dope heads habit.

Hey JohnLM: I understand everything you say that others say, as well. I have a different philosophy on "protecting my home" and by that I mean the "stuff" sitting in every room (except my bedroom) that is insured and replaceable. It is only my wife and I and when I go into the bedroom for the night, the bedroom door is locked, a substantial door wedge is placed on bottom of door, I have my cell for 911 and I have my remote car key/alarm. Someone enters my house I will call 911 and activate the car alarm. I will not "protect my home" by confronting someone or several who are better equipped or more experienced than I with their firearms (if they have them). All the "stuff" is replaceable, I AM NOT. If they try to defeat the bedroom door, we are now talking imminent danger and I can guarantee you that they will not leave the house the way they came in. If "protecting my home" means "stuff", it just is not worth the risk to me. Again, I can understand someone saying differently but I will not die over insured property unless I am in imminent danger and as long as I am behind my locked bedroom door with my defenses, I am not in imminent danger.

Some of us tho, have bedrooms at each end of the house, and have to go out and deal with whatever is going on regardless. I'm not going to spend much time trying to figgure out the BG intent. They can read the news... and they break in knowing the risks.

Hey Rich: Understand the situation. Sorry if I misled. My point on just wife and me is only one bedroom to worry about. If you have children or other family members spread out in house, the situation changes dramatically from my situation. I guess my ultimate comment is that "stuff", insured or even not insured, is just not worth my life if the BGs are better at this gun game than me. I understand when people say otherwise, but "you do what you gotta do and I will do what I gotta do"--simple as that.

One caution on yard signs that mention you are armed.

They can make you a target of burglary. The BG just has to verify you are not home. I find it interesting that after many justified shootings, there is a burglary where the guns are stolen.

I also wonder about the Oklahoma woman that shot the guy breaking into her home a week after her husband died of cancer. Many cancer patients are given pain killers like oxycontin and vicodin to deal with the pain. I wonder if those guys weren't targeting her for the drugs.

Understood. Not gonna run out and have a gun fight over crap in the garage even tho I have expensive toys out there. I would like to have the option to lock down if needed myself. We have security doors, 2 large dogs and I'm replacing our door with a heavy one that has a lock. Gives me some time to react. We have also been looking at a gate for the driveway. Can prevent vehicles from getting to close to the homestead and that sould help discourage the BG's.

With the business that I have on site durring the day, I cant really put threatening signs on the property. "Dog on Premisis" is about it, and the security system stickers. Nothing threatening or mentioning guns allowed, sensitive clientel and a state law that could raise eyebrows if questioned.

Stupid newscaster. If you walk outside & he comes after u out there then you are no longer protected under the castle law in most states & u shoot him outside then you are in trouble. If someone comes in my house I'm not gonna ask.him if he Just wants the TV or if he has plans to assault me.

I do not advise the use of deadly force against anyone, but if they are a threat to my life my family all bets are off. Just for information: According to Section 9.42 of the Texas Penal Code, a landowner can shoot at or use other deadly force against a trespasser if the landowner reasonably believes the land or property cannot be protected or recovered by any other means, or that the landowner himself would be exposed to substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury if the landowner does not use deadly force. A landowner can also shoot at or use other deadly force against a trespasser if the force is immediately necessary to prevent the trespasser's imminent commission of arson, burglary, robbery, aggravated robbery, theft during the nighttime or criminal mischief during the nighttime; or to prevent the trespasser who is fleeing immediately after committing one of those acts from escaping with the property. "Criminal mischief" includes "knowingly or intentionally damaging or destroying, tampering with or marking, inscribing slogans, drawing or painting on tangible property " of the property owner.

On the TV news last night they interviewed what I believe was the mother of the Everett BG.

I pass on part of her statement - why did he have to shoot him five times. I have not seen very much about the actual details of the shooting.
