Hole in the Hammer

Why do some pistols have a hole in the hammer, such as the 1911?

thier supposed to be quicker. Thier is supposed to be less delay in the hammer striking the firing pin. plus it looks cool, and it makes the gun a tad lighter. same with the target trigger.

My brother has installed those on both his 1911's.

Yeah, it technically lightens them, but the weight difference is negligible at best.

Mostly, it's just asthetics...nowadays, it's pretty much expected on any non-GI 1911.

Was there some kind of lanyard hole on the grip of the mounted cavalry handguns from back in the day? I'm not well versed in those guns, so I could be WAAAAY off target here.
