High school student disarms gunman…gets suspended?

It could be that the student was suspended for his own safety... Not so much as a punishment. Police officers are suspended all the time when involved in a shooting incident. Sometimes, I think parents and students take it the wrong way. Just saying.

My thoughts exactly. It's a right thing to do for his safety.
His academic record is going to be tainted by a suspension because he did the right thing? Why not just say "he got a couple free days off school for being a bad-ass!", not "suspended".

Only reason I could see for suspending the kids was a safety concern, not a punishment, however, the reading of this sounds like a punishment for a good action....Stupid in my opinion...

WTF ???!!!! The passengers on Flight 98 were hailed as "Heros". That's how those kids should be treated !! They fought for their own lives and the lives if the other students on that bus!!! That's just totally messed up

The zero tolerance in school district rules is a load of crap! When my kids were in school and they had just started this "stuff" the kids were told, if attacked they were supposed to(1) tell a teacher or (2) lay down and NOT FIGHT BACK!
I said to my kids "fight back" if you get suspended so be it! I sent my kids for an education not to lay down a get the crap beat out of them!
I also said "I'll handle the school board, even if I had to go to school with them"
This is how the kids get indoctrinated. To have the government to control them when they grow up. Just obey our laws and rules and we will take care of you all your life. The government is getting too intertwined in our lives. They want to control us from birth to the grave.
Anyway that's the way I see it.

So then similarly, if somebody wrestles the gun from a robber in a liquor store holdup, he should be ARRESTED... "for his own safety", RIGHT?

They could put him in the same cell with the BG since they get along so well together. After all like you said it is for his own safety. :dance3:

Being your own person can have a cost.

I started a new school when I was a freshman and life was not good after that, I was raised to be my own person a non-conformist not just part of the crowd and I have a father that was willing to go to the mat for me as long as I was in the right (not necessarily societies version of right). He proved that several times during my high school years and it makes me proud to be his son. On several occasions Sheriff Deputies were called due to the nature of the problems, there was not a single time that they took me into custody due to my fathers support. Self defense usually will win out if you have someone on the childs side willing to back them and support their efforts.
Political Correctness is not new and wasn't always called that either but has been going on for a long time as my experiences occurred in the mid 60's during the era of peace and love.
Control is what it has been all about for decades and unfortunately society has allowed it to happen in the name of keep our children safe. Safe then is not safe today nor will it be safe tomorrow. Overcome and adapt, words that will always help you survive.

What, exactly, makes you think suspending the kids was for their own safety? Afraid the courts will turn the football player loose and he will come after them? Afraid his buddies will seek revenge? What is their new danger that they can't be allowed in the school? I call BS to that thinking. Life goes on, the kids are heros and the School Administrators are pushing a communist agenda. It is what it is.
