hi point pistols

I've read a lot of reviews on hi point pistols so I know a lot about the good and the bad... Just looking for one to tinker around with and probably use as a nightstand gun what caliber do you think I should get and all you gun snobs need not reply

Not reliable enough for my peace of mind to have as a "night stand " weapon. Something to tinker with at the range I suppose it would be ok for that. I would go 9mm. Good luck.

I've shot the 45 many times with not one issue.
Also had a 9mm carbine. Went bang everytime.
9mm is cheap to shoot at paper, but a shtf gun for me is 45acp.
Whatever you get, make sure you put a few hundred rounds through it before you depend on it for your life.

Have the C9 here to plink at the range. Always goes bang, quite accurate.
Warning: Hi-Points use the firing pin to eject casings. Do not cycle a live round it could go off in mid-cycle.

I would get a 9mm... when you first get it rack the slide about 100 times, flip the safety on and off 75 times, and eject the mag about 50 times. Then with a dremel or some 400 grit wet or dry sandpaper polish the feed ramp. Then oil it and put a little gun grease on the feed ramps and go shoot 200 rounds.

Once broke in properly they are actually quite dependable and accurate, they will work as a nightstand gun.

Save your money and buy a better quality firearm. Just my opinion. I made this mistake with a Steyr M40-A1 I bought for $350 a few years ago and now i'm considering selling it only to buy something else in .40 cal. I guess I have a slight case of buyers remorse but it was a good price. But to your point of having a nightstand gun, Idk... I would want something that when I read reviews there really is no "bad" along with the good. Whatever you get, consider a .40 cal. especially if you're keeping it for your primary home defense gun. Downside is that they are more expensive than a 9mm however. That being said there is really nothing wrong with a 9mm for stopping a threat as long as the shots are well placed. Also consider what you already have. Do you believe you should have guns of the same caliber or a more diverse selection due to possible shortages and scarce availability in the future? Just something I've considered. Have fun shopping.

I have owned three hi-points, and been pleased with them all. They have been very reliable, and my CC firearm is the 9mm compact. In the past, I would have suggested the .40 for home defense, but I have gradually come over to the .45. I'm looking to pick one up in the not-too-distant future. Big round, sub-sonic, less chance of over-penetration, especially if you load it with jhp rounds. Even a tweaker is going to have a hard time continuing an attack after being hit by a round or two from a .45.

For a carry gun I suggest looking at these: Ruger SR9c
Smith & Wesson M&P 9c
Beretta PX4 Storm compact
Bersa BP9cc

The HP 9 is a very good firearm. You can find Youtube vids like this

that give you an idea of their durability.

Mine has almost 2000 rounds through it and it works like a champ.

As far as the comments about waiting and buying a more expensive firearm, some people just can't afford it and I sure wouldn't want to deny a vulnerable citizen who just doesn't have the cash the ability to protect themselves and their family.

You want to see what they can take? Watch this torture test, and then tell me what you think. I've watched similar tests that had DESTROYED Glocks, S&W's, and other high-priced handguns.
