Heres a challenge for you

Alright, I'm currently looking for a decent handgun for my father for concealed carry. I carry a Glock 21 Gen 4 or a Springfield XDm. When he was a kid, my father had an accident that nearly caused him to lose his fingers on his right hand. Because of this he ended up having a crooked index finger and when he shoots (at least with my guns) he has to grip halfway down the gun to avoid his finger scraping on the body of the gun above the trigger. Would a 1911 be a better alternative? Obviously it wouldn't work with a grip safety. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My best advice is to stop trying to pick one out for him, bring him to the gun store and let him determine for himself which one best meets his needs.

Find a range with rentals available. Let him rent out different weapons and that way you'll know.

+1 on having him pick his own gun. One suggestion though... has he thought about trying to shoot left-handed?

Part of my training is two handed, one-handed strong side, and one-handed weak side. If need be, I'd be adept at shooting in any fashion. This might be an alternative for him. YMMV

We were also trained with step two live fire from strong and weak hands, and live fire offhand strong and weak hands. Might need to have him try this also at the range (don't shoot the tray/rest in front of you indoors!).

The close to the body point-and-shoot drills were not expected, but very necessary when an assailant is so close you can't extend and discharge your sidearm.

Best answer by far is to let him pick his own gun....I bought my wife a new .380 for her bday and she hated it...just didn't seat right in her hand, kept it for myself and took her to the gun shop the next day, found the one she liked and bought it. Won't ever buy a gun for her again without her picking it out first.
