UPDATE: CHOSE THE WALTHER!

Link Removed

I finally had a chance to test fire a PPS, and I loved the way it shot (trigger was really crisp)!! I did like the all-metal construction Sig, but the feature set of the PPS won my heart (interchangeable backstraps, ambidextrous mag release, rear cocking indicator).

The PPS is everything I loved about my H&K P30...WITHOUT the trigger I hated!!

I had originally purchased an M&P Shield 9mm for my daily carry, but less than 24-hours after I brought it home the wife saw it and commandeered it for HER personal defense weapon. And that's fine...it was a great price, but thats about the only reason I bought it...it didn't make my heart skip a beat like the Kimber Solo Carry did. But now I need to buy myself another carry weapon. I know this is probably going to sound odd, but even though I really like the Shield (for the price) I do NOT want two of the same weapon in the family, as I may get the Shield back someday because the wife has found a gun in pink she likes better (I'm kidding, but not really...sigh Link Removed).

Here is what I'm looking at (ALL in 9mm)...

  • Walther PPS ~ (found ONE at $525)
  • Kahr PM9 ~ (found three, priced between $600 - $700)
  • Sig Sauer P938 ~ (found two ["Nightmare" & "Blackwood"] at $640/each)

I have not had an opportunity to shoot any of these weapons...but I've purchased every weapon I own (save for the Shield) PRIOR to shooting, and I have never regretted a single purchase. I find that I can readily adapt to any firearm with some practice at the range. Well, I say that because I have YET to buy a weapon that I absolutely couldn't shoot or hated shooting (knock on wood). Also, I don't have a preferred carry method. I will pocket-carry or holster depending on what I'm wearing, so minute differences in size will not matter much to me. I'm primarily concerned with reliability, functionality and accuracy (the last one being somewhat subjective).

I'm leaning toward the Walther because of price (and because James Bond choose Walther, so its GOTTA be cool...right?), but I would really like feedback from owners about pros and cons of each weapon. And if anyone out there happens to own (or has owned) all three, I would REALLY appreciate which one, if any, you thought was an overall winner.

Thanks

I think the closest to the Kimber Solo is the Sig. But... yeah, choosing via poll isn't the greatest idea. Of course, when I got stuck between the Shield and XDs, the deciding factor turned out to be the fact that I found the Shield in stock first. (I shot both and loved them equally.) So I won't knock you too much for trying to use a poll, but if you're this stuck you really ought to go shoot them.

We bought the SIG 938 for my wife and she likes it because of it's smaller size and ease of carry. I would recomend that you handle one before you purchase. Here is what I noticed: Because of the small size of the gun, the manual thumb safety is hard for me to use. I would not be comfortable relying that I could deactive the safety efficiently if needed. If you have medium to smaller hands this might not be a problem. Also, the trigger pull seems a little too heavy. Combine that with the relatively short sight radius and you really have to do everthing right to keep your groups small.

We pactice at the range quite a bit and there have been no problems with function, it has never failed in any way.

Good luck!

I have both the PM9 and the P938. I'm one of those that has many guns, both 1911's and striker fired, and I'm schizophrenic about them. To keep myself from being too confused I spend half the year carrying 1911's and half carrying striker fired. When I want a really small gun I carry the P938 during the 1911 phase and the PM9 during the striker fired phase. I like both guns with the nod to the P938. Someone pointed the trigger pull is heavy. Agreed, mine is close to 8#, however, I have no trouble shooting it as it is crisp. Of course, the PM9's trigger is looooong though smooth. I have competed with each in IDPA BUG competition and did okay.

Do you intend to do much range shooting? if so I would go with the Walther, the Sig and Kahr are great guns but they have some pretty stout felt recoil, not unliveable, but annoying after a bunch of rds,

I originally had a quote here, but removed it because I don't want to single any one person out, because there are many of you that do what I say below.

This website more than any other gun forum, seems to fling personal attacks and start flaming people at the drop of a hat. I'm sure a lot of other people on this site (the non-regulars) feel the same as I do. This would be a better site, if all of us were more civil and offer knowledge to others that seek it, rather then burning them for their lack of same. Remember, we all had to start somewhere, all of us weren't born with the knowledge we have now, or think we have.

People who choose guns based "votes" of others in gun forum "polls" probably shouldn't have guns in the first place.

That goes double, maybe, when the pollster uses a sophomoric screen name that most people stopped chortling at in junior high school as they they matured. Some never did grow up, I guess.

He can be a victim of his own idiocy OR he is just having fun and engaging in some conversation with other gun owners. Let him have some fun, things are tough enough out there!

Just this past Saturday I shot a friends new XDs 9mm. Very well behaved and soft shooting. Thin and easy to conceal. BTW Springfield Armory has great customer service.
$.02 plain

Gotta love the ignore button:agree:

Why choose? Get all three. :pleasantry:

I have the PPS and love it. It is thin, easily concealed and is extremely accurate......if it misses the bullseye, it ain't it's fault :)
I have fed it every brand of both expensive and cheap ammo I can get and it loves it all. I am lefthanded and the mag release setup on it works easily for a lefty or a righty as it is under the trigger guard. I put a Talon Grip on it and use the smaller backplate for the grip (PPS comes with 2 backplates). I have both IWB and OWB holsters for it that work well depending on my dress at the time. It has good 'heft' to it and is a natural pointer.........and it's a Walther!

Now, the confession! I carry the PPS occasionally and shoot it often at the range. Most of my carry is with the Ruger LCP. It is just sooo easy to conceal almost without knowing it's there. With Hornady CD's it's a mean little weapon. It's not a target gun, it's point and bang, bang, bang, which is what I figure is exactly what I will be doing if I ever have to use it defensively. I put a Hogue Grip on it and white dotted the sights (which is nice for shooting paper, but totally unnecessary for pointin' and pullin')!
Didn't mean to hijack the thread here, just throwing out an option. As many say, the gun you will carry comfortably is much better than the one at home in the safe!

I don't think you can get a better shooting handgun than the Bersa Thunder 9mm Ultra Compact. That said, it really isn't ultra compact... more of a medium compact. Just my own contribution to the OP.

My name is Hugh Gentry. "Hugh Jorgan" (although "sophomoric") was a running joke within my circle of friends back in the day, so it became my screen name on the very first online forum I joined back in the 1990's (and every forum since...unless someone beat me to it). I'm really surprised that asking for an opinion on carry guns that I have no access to prior to purchase (the range I shoot at had only ONE of the three choices as a test fire weapon) is deemed such a nonsensical approach by some here. I'm not asking the membership to choose the gun for me, I just wanted INSIGHT from those here who have owned/used these pistols, and perhaps bring to my attention factors I didn't consider.

For instance, it was pointed out to me (on a DIFFERENT forum) that the Walther will NOT fire with the backstrap removed...and if that backstrap is ever lost or damaged somehow, the pistol is rendered useless. NOT something the sales guy in my LGS happened to mention.

And exactly how many years of education do you have invested learning to talk like that.............

What does my level of education have to do with the manner in which I choose to retort to an online flame? Granted, I'm no Rhodes Scholar or MIT grad...but I possess a four year degree from a very well-respected university. I will admit that my reply was somewhat crude, but I feel it was apropos.

PPS comes with 2 backstraps as mentioned for hand sizes. Pretty difficult to lose a backstrap actually :) The Talon Grips as well as making a great addition to the control of the gun also pre-empts any chance to lose the backstrap :) YMMV!

Do you want a single stack or hi-cap? Have you considered an Springfield XDS? I don't know what your budget is but there are some real nice compact 1911's in 9mm too.
