Help! Dog Got Skunked.

BC1

,
Anyone know a good remedy? Took my border collie out at 5:00 AM. I always take a good look before I let the dogs out in case of skunks, bears, etc. All clear. The dog bolted to the woods line and I could see something white moving away. Dog ran straight back to me and whoooo! It's 6:15 AM and my wife is bathing the dog with a mix of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dawn dish detergent. Found this on a vet MD web site. Web says no tomato juice. Anyone have any ideas... it's wicked!

I've never smelt a skunk, we don't have them here. But my dog would like to roll in any dead, rotting animal carcass he might come across - that was pretty unpleasant. If a skunk smells worse than that you have my sympathy...

He sounds like a real gem. We just finished the third bath this morning. It's getting better. She's almost good to go. Now my wife needs a bath. I'll take her outside and hose her down. If she knew I was cracking jokes I'd be in deep sneakers right now.

I had a Golden Retriever that got skunked one day, let her out the back door and she bolted towards the fence, came back to me just like your dog did. First thing I thought of was tomato juice, didn't work, got some stuff from the vet to get rid of the smell, took about three treatments to get the smell off the dog "and me" used about a dozen bottles of fabreeze to get the house smelling ok again over the course of 2 weeks. I'll never forget that it was bad.

Your wife sounds alot like my wife. LOL

Did it say why not to use tomato juice, unless it is toxic to dogs like chocolate? That's what I have always heard and even saw an episode of "Call of the Wildman" on The Discovery Channel where he is shown creating a mixture of tomato juice, apple cider vinegar, and sliced potatoes to remove the smell after he had gotten sprayed while capturing a pest skunk.

ELIMINATE SKUNK ODOR??? YES use "PURE AYRE"

use this link to read about it..... Odor eliminator PureAyre eliminates cat, pet, smoke, skunk, cigars, gasoline, cooking and musty odors.

its sold at amazon and PETCO & a few other stores...their website gives names of stores that carry it.

we live where we are surrounded by woods...my dog has had the same bad fortune of meeting up with a skunk...THIS STUFF ELIMINATED THE STINK!!

I have a gallon of this stuff on hand, but a small spray bottle will be all you need for your dog. Its IS expensive...but it works

You spray it on till the animal is wet with it, work it in, and leave it... it will leave a slight minty smell, nothing else

Because of the nature of a dog, they almost always catch a skunk spray up the nose, and in the eyes.....this product is safe to use up the nose and in the face.

Go to tractor supply or look online for,"Nature's Miracle, Skunk Odor Remover" its about $10.00 a bottle. I have a dog that will travel miles to find and kill a skunk! in the past 2 months he has been sprayed 5 times and brought in 3 skunks for use! I think he brings them home to brag about how good a hunter he is! He brought in 2 in one day for use to enjoy. This Oder remover is the only thing that I have found that works completely. You spray it on let it sit for 5 minutes then shampoo the dog.( you will need your own spray bottle if you buy the big size bottle) If the dog is real bad or long hair you may have to do it twice! ( hint use rubber gloves!) The spray is oil based and regular soap won't take it off. If you have Skunks around your house put out rags soaked with ammonia and it will deter them and they will change their routine. You have to replenish the ammonia every 2 weeks or so. Hope you get deskunked!
