Have You Ever Had To Draw Your Firearm In Self Defense? - Have You Had To Fire It?

We have all heard stories before, on the news, in books, and in the movies. I wanted to start a thread where real people that we all, "know" (on a username basis) might be inclined to share their real life stories and outcomes for us all to read. Thank you all for your participation in advance.

that's right. if you fast enough, and draw EARLY on enough (but not too early, obviously) from far enough away, and leave him an escape route, the odds are at least 5 to 1 that you wont have to fire, 10 to 1 that wont have to hit him, and 20 to 1 that you wont have to "shoot him into the ground" with swift, multiple chest hits, using powerful loads (or brain him). So much for "needing" powerful gun or lots of ability with it (other than dryfire and airsoft can give you, speed of ccw draw).

I had someone yank my truck door open on a back road here in Utah and it scared the sh#* outta me. I drew my gun and fired once missing him barely and I sped off almost hitting him. After firing I called 911 to report it and the officers found him at the 7-11 around the corner. Turned out that he had a knife on him and several warrants from aggravated burglary to theft. This was 10 years ago. I received a ticket for firing a gun inside city limits but the judge threw it out. Not fun at all.....

Edit: Had I hit him I would have probably been in a big legal mess still 10 years later. Our wonderful legal system at it's best. Even though it was obvious he was trying to carjack me.

Does an M4 count...? How about a 240...?

No, I have never had to draw on someone in the traditional sense. I've taken the gun out of the holster before around the house and checked the house in the middle of the night for possible threats.

You're the second response to the OP and seem to have not a clue as to what he was asking. What are you talking about?

At around 11 am one morning, I was mowing the grass and a neighbor up the street apparently thought that was too early. He came to my house wearing a bathrobe, underwear and flip flops yelling and cursing things about the rough night he had and how dare I wake his sleep. I pretty much ignored him as I was mowing my grass; this seemed to piss him off more. He grabbed a fallen tree branch and started to walk toward me. I drew and told him to get the ______ off my property. His face was priceless. I've not ever heard much from that particular neighbor ever since.

Had he politely asked me to wait awhile to mow, I probably would have complied. I don't hear so well when people are yelling nasty things to me.

Wolf_fire......thank you!!!! Someone understands the concept of this thread.....spread the word and keep the stories coming....A+ to you bro!!!

That would have been priceless to see his face. He probably poops himself every time he hears you mow the lawn... ROFL Link Removed

I've drawn it but, thank God, I didn't have to fire it. Happened while stopped on the side of the interstate. Two dirtbags pulled up behind me, got out of their car and started coming towards me. They also started flanking me. I told them to back off but they kept coming. I aimed my .357 at the closest one and they decided to take off. A few miles up the road, a Highway Patrol guy had them pulled over. I stopped and told the trooper what had happened. He told me they had just been arrested for robbing another guy before they stopped at me.

I have heard of this happening. Never a good situation when your put in that position. I'm glad it turned out good for you.

Long long before ccw was common I had to pull my AMT .380 backup. I was at an ATM machine at a local bank just outside Atlanta just after midnight. This was before ATM's became drive ups. I believe this was around 1980. Anyway, after work I went to get some funds for my early morning trip to Nashville for the Xmas holidays. This bank was on the edge of a row of stores including a Kroger superstore. I observed two young males walking down the sidewalk out by the road suddenly angle off across the parking lot towards me. There was nothing in that direction other than the ATM and they really didn't appear to be the typical ATM user of that time period. So, I casually took my AMT out and laid it on the ledge of the ATM. In plain sight of those two and where I could quickly access it. Funny, they angled right back towards the direction they were initially going.

Sigh, years later that gun was stolen from my truck. I surely hated that as I had gotten it customized for easy pocket carry by cutting and recrowning the barrel even with the slide and having all sharp angles bead blasted.

Wow, I know that did scared the heck out of you, it's a good thing that you did draw because had you hadn't you might not have been here today.

These are some awesome situation that is coming up guys and thanks to the OP for asking this question but my wife get on me about going to the atm machine about this very thing. If I have to I look all around while I'm pulling up and when I get out.

I call BS on your odds quote, Please cite your source. Your last sentence shows that you are clueless. What gun/holster do you recommend? What kind of training do you have?

I don't understand any of thru's posts. Sounds like rambling to me. and sounds like he/she is just trying to get his post count up for some reason.

I had an experience where a (i'm guessing) homeless guy was at a gas station pan handling for change. I had stopped on my way to work and he came over and asked for a quarter for the bus, I informed him that I didn't have any cash. He then started acting aggravated and told me that "people kept telling him he was asking for too much". I asked him to please calm down and get away from me....he did...but then proceeded to pull the same stunt with the car across the pump from me. Then this guy really lost it and started screaming and flailing about people not giving him a quarter. I (hypothetically) drew my gun and kept it out of view between my back leg and my drivers side door. I was in the middle of fueling and couldn't really start the car and drive off. He came towards me again screaming and waving his hands about not getting a quarter from anyone. I told him to "please get away from me now"...thankfully he took a couple of steps away. That is about as close to drawing down on someone as i've come. This man wasn't sane. I called the cops and alerted them to the problem as soon as I was away from the area. I am very happy that it didn't escalate....i really wish that people with mental problems were dealt with better.

I understand that it is tempting to get the information from those that have been there. Unfortunately, anyone that has been in a self defense shooting will have that hanging over their heads for the rest of their life. It is a very poor legal plan to discuss these shootings in a public forum of any kind.
