Harkins Theater's

Well, disturbing new development for this locally owned Arizona chain, probably doomed the moment they started expanding into California, but I've been patronizing them once or twice a week for the last 9 years and for the first time today saw the No Weapons stickers with x's through knives and guns in the doors. This is at their stand alone theater in Prescott Valley, AZ, I had only seen stickers before on their in-mall locations where it was mall policy and not the theater's. Anyhow, asked the manager and they said that it wasn't a new policy but they just started putting the stickers up. I find it strange that it's not new because I've been carrying every time I have visited the theater in the last 6 years that I've been old enough to carry, both concealed and openly depending on the day and what else I was doing. I was asked to leave after talking to the manager because I was carrying at the time (well, he told me to put it in the car before I came back). They said it was because they want to promote a 'family environment', as if that has any meaning. I'm sure the Theater in Aurora was a family environment too considering the babies that were shot at their midnight showing of an R rated movie.

Anyhow, I wrote an email to their customer service department, copied below, not sure what else there is to say about it.

I am writing today because I am disappointed with a new development at one (or perhaps all?) of your theaters, Prescott Valley in particular. I have been a patron of this theater and your other locations since I first moved to Arizona in 2004 and I and my family have been attending movies at Harkins about once or twice per week during that time. But today was the first time that I saw the 'No Weapons' stickers at the door, I asked the manager of this location about them and was told that the stickers were just recently placed there, and I was asked to leave with my firearm as I was carrying a firearm at the time and I have been doing on every visit in the last 6 years that I have been old enough to do so legally. Normally I carry concealed however this is certainly not the first time I have carried openly (particularly on a weekend or when I plan to go shooting before or after the trip to the movies) into this location but I was told by the manager that this is because Harkins is a 'Family Environment'. I'm not sure how that has anything to do with a person carrying a firearm legally for the defense of themselves and their family, and a public location that does not allow the average law abiding citizen to carry a firearm does certainly not become a safe haven. Nearly every mass shooting site in recent history has been a legal 'gun free zone' and we can see how well that has worked for them. I am afraid because of this change and the denial of a lawful person's right to defend themselves, a right which the state of Arizona in particular has a long history of embracing, I can no longer justify bringing myself or my family to your theaters. I guess it is good that there is another theater opening in the Prescott area soon and hopefully they will have a more pragmatic point of view. I will also be sure to make my friends and fellow lawful carriers of firearms know of this change in policy so that they too can evaluate for themselves what their priorities are.

I do not presume to know the laws of Arizona since I don't live there, but it's a little different in Kansas. Kansas is an open carry state and you can carry it openly anywhere other than government buildings and a few other exceptions. What I always thought was a "No Guns Allowed" sign (the typical red circle with a line through the gun) actually means "No CONCEALED guns" allowed. Our CC instructor went over this in detail in class, showed a holstered gun on his hip with his shirt over it (concealed) and his shirt tucked behind it (open). Very little difference, but the difference between legal and not legal.

Not so in AZ, concealed and open carry allowed without permit here anywhere besides a few places (government buildings and the like), but any business that posts no firearms makes it a crime (trespassing) to go there armed, concealed or open, doesn't matter, they don't have to ask you to leave they can call the cops and charge you immediately, if they are posted. That said, usually the cops here are lenient to lawful carry and will ask you to leave before just arresting you, but it's the business owner's right to post, and it's my right to tell everyone I know not to go there.

It's too bad all states can't be the same. And I don't think businesses understand how much they hurt themselves by posting that. In Kansas at least, I don't think they even know that they're barring the only people that might be able to help in a case of a bad guy with a gun.

We sell these cards for just this reason. Hand the business owner or manager one of these cards and take your money elsewhere. I keep some in my wallet and have handed out several. As law-abiding gun owners we need to stop being silent on these matters and go on the offensive. Good for you for taking the time and effort to write the business owner. Hopefully they will reevaluate.

I really like these cards, they're a wonderful idea, and when you have something else I want (so I can justify the shipping charge) I'll be ordering some.

So update with the response from Harkins, They're basically telling me to keep it in my pants, though I'm not sure how I feel about it if they're outwardly posting signs against guns but then saying in not so many words they're okay concealed. I guess I do partly understand how open carry might make some moviegoers nervous these days however this is Arizona and openly carried firearms are everywhere, I'd figure they wouldn't be too sensitive to it by now. Another troubling thing is by posting the sign they are technically making it Illegal in this state to enter even concealed. Now if their policy is just to ask you to leave if someone notices that's fine, but if some manager decided to call the cops you could be charged without any other warning... Not to mention how it might impact a defense case if you actually did have to defend yourself there. Posting their response below, but what are your thoughts? Should I continue to support this business or not?

Thank you for taking the time to write to us; and the chance to assist you. We strive to provide the best movie going experience at all times and the success of our theatres is directly related to the satisfaction of our guests. We take the safety and comfort of our guests very seriously.
Harkins Theatres has been family owned and operated since 1933, and we feel as though we are entertaining our friends and family in our theatres. When attending our theatres there are some general rules we enact to ensure the safety, peace of mind and enjoyment of all of our guests. Our goal is to maintain a family friendly environment. To that end, we do restrict noticeable weapons of all kinds in our theatres.
This is not a new policy for us. We have always asked our managers to approach guests with noticeable weapons, whether observed by an employee or guest, and ask that guest to remove the weapon from the theatre. We’ve found that enforcing these rules through personal dialogue between our managers and our guests creates the best results for us and our guests. Adding signage to our doors was not a result of our policies changing rather a visual reminder to our guests regarding the policy. To clarify the reference to “noticeable weapons” means we do not search guests or require guests to go through metal detectors or other security devices.
While we certainly understand your passion regarding this issue, unfortunately we are not planning any changes to this policy. The overwhelming majority of moviegoers are made very uncomfortable by weapons in the theatre and they make this known to us at every opportunity. We understand that you disagree with us on this policy and I have passed on all of your comments to the appropriate parties.
We are hopeful that we can otherwise create such a compelling moviegoing experience that you will still be able to enjoy visiting our theatres.
Thank you again for bringing your views to our personal attention; we hope you continue to visit our theatres in the future. Have a wonderful day.

And with that beening said I would go conceal and if nobody goes on a shooting spree well nobody will know you have it and if some fool do go on a shooting spree well you can take action, not that you will go after him or her but if they start shooting your way, in a way that you can't escape the situation you will just take care of business. Good luck with this.

I would find a new theater. Just takes one libtard manager getting hired to mess your day up.
